Relaxing on the sofas in their fabulous, modern kitchen breakfast room, Amber and James can gaze outside to watch the children playing on the lawn. The rear of their detached three-bedroom Ascot property has become a superb, inside-outside living and entertaining space following significant extension and remodelling work, Amber explains. “We opened up the rooms at the back of the house and carried out a large, single-storey extension,” she says. “This has given us a wonderful family area, with room for cooking, dining and watching television together, and with bi-folding doors that can be pulled right back on to the garden whenever the weather is warm.”
EXCELLENT SPACE
It was this potential for enhancement that first drew them to the 1960s-built house on Asher Drive approximately six years ago, she recalls. “We knew we could carry out work here and really make it our own. It already offered excellent space and it had a good-sized garden, with plenty of room to enlarge it further.” With planning permission in place for another extension, new owners could make even more of the house if they wished, she adds. “They could go out to the side to create a sitting or family room, a utility room and upgraded cloakroom, with a fourth bedroom and bathroom above it,” she outlines.
OUTSTANDING KITCHEN
As it is, however, the house has been finished beautifully by the couple, who have an eye for interior design. The splendid kitchen features white gloss units and a central island, with breakfast bar, together with a built-in speaker system. Natural light pours in through skylight windows and there is underfloor heating. “We practically live in this part of the house,” she admits. “We have a big table where we can seat up to 10 people and, in the summer, everyone can wander out into the garden.”
LIGHT ROOMS
Carefully chosen colours and attractive wallpaper prints feature throughout the house, including in the inviting drawing room, which has doors through to the kitchen. “This is a lovely, spacious room, which is very light because of its large window and, like the kitchen breakfast room, is great for entertaining,” she continues. “We installed a wood-burner in here a couple of years ago, making it a cosy and inviting space for spending time with friends and family or simply relaxing on winter evenings.” Upstairs, some remodelling has also taken place, in order to create a generous family bathroom and an en suite shower room. “The master bedroom is a good size and like the drawing room has a large window,” she adds.
PRIVATE GARDEN
The garden at the Asher Road house has been a great addition to the property. With a play area at one end and a terrace for barbecues, outside dining and entertaining at the other, it offers good space for family living and entertaining. “It is also very private because of all the screening from the leafy trees in our neighbours’ gardens,” Amber observes. The surrounding area is also very peaceful, with woodland walks and a duck pond within easy reach. “It is also nice to be able to take the children to the racecourse on their scooters or bikes. We are on a cul-de-sac with some lovely walks close by yet also close to everything else we need,” she says.
GREAT CONVENIENCE
Indeed, local shops, including a corner store, butcher’s and takeaways are within walking distance. Ascot High Street is about 30 minutes on foot and Bracknell, with its refurbished Lexicon Centre, is also easy to access. “It takes about 10 minutes to drive to the M3 or M4 from here and there are stations where you can catch trains to be in London within an hour. It is also very easy to reach Heathrow and Gatwick airports.” The property is in the catchment area for the sought-after Charters School and is well-placed for golf courses, including Mill Ride, and health clubs. “This is a friendly community in a very convenient location – we hope to stay in the area if we can,” Amber adds. “This house has been a perfect family home for us and could suit someone else looking for open-plan living and a good-sized family garden in a great location within Ascot.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The house on Asher Drive is set back from the road by a driveway providing good space for off-road parking. There is also a garage. To the rear of the house, bi-folding doors pull back on to a terrace and a generous family garden, featuring a lawn and children’s play area. The south-east-facing garden is private and ideal for entertaining.
