To understand Wymering Mansions is to understand how Maida Vale came to be. In 1895, William Henry Pearce was granted permission to develop Essendine Road, followed by Morshead and Grantully Roads bordering Paddington Recreation Ground. After the completion of these, Widley and Wymering Roads were built, filling in the gaps — and it was here, around 1904, that Wymering Mansions rose as one of the crowning statements of that Edwardian endeavour. The block stands today as it did then: a commanding presence of red brick within the Maida Vale Conservation Area, its pedigree unmistakable.

The building announces itself with a black-and-white tiled walkway with green borders in the Edwardian mosaic style, leading to an entrance of considered grandeur: a great glossy black door with raised mouldings, its brass furniture catching the light, flanked by side panels and crowned with a fanlight. Elegance was the calling card of the Edwardians, and this entranceway remains a custodian of that.

The Interiors

Inside, the open reception room faces the light through generous bay windows, a space that accommodates both lounge and dining with ease. A bespoke media unit brings the room quietly into the present, designed with internal storage, shelving, a recessed cavity for the flat-screen television and integrated LED strip lighting, with downlights within the shelves themselves. Engineered wood floors and neutral cream walls complete the room. In fact, these run throughout.

The principal bedroom is a generous double, its huge sash window offering charming views over the communal gardens below. Integrated bedside cupboards and storage keep the room uncluttered. Wymering Road takes its name from the Hampshire estate of Robert Thistlethwaite, son-in-law of the original leaseholder Sir John Frederick; a small historical footnote that lends the address a quiet distinction. The block has drawn its share of notable residents over the decades, serving as a reminder that this has always been an address with something to say about itself.

Maida Vale is arranged around the intersection of the Grand Union and Regent's Canal, with a small pocket known as Little Venice, famous for its colourful houseboats, Italianate villas and red mansion blocks forming the wider residential scene. The Canal Café Theatre is one of West London's most respected fringe venues.

The dining scene rewards exploration.
