Why Not Rent Somewhere Worth Putting Down Roots? Calstock is not a passing through sort of place. This is a long term family home in a vibrant hidden gem village where trains cross the Tamar Valley on a viaduct and you can watch the rowers on the river.
Life in Calstock moves at a different pace. Mornings might mean walking down the hill to catch the train into Plymouth, with the beautiful Tamar Valley unfolding beside you the whole way.
But evenings are simpler. A pint at The Boot or The Tamar Inn. A stroll along the quay. Or just heading back up the hill to sit out and catch the sunset from your southwest facing back garden.
Inside, this is a proper three storey family house with plenty of versatile space.
On the ground floor, the kitchen and living area stretch almost 26 feet (8m) from front to back. It’s one long, sociable space, with the kitchen tucked to one side behind a breakfast bar.
Exposed brickwork and a timber beam add character without feeling forced. There’s space for a dining table and a comfortable seating area, so family life doesn’t end up squeezed into one corner.
The main bathroom is on the ground floor bathroom, plus a separate laundry room that makes a real difference in a busy household.
There’s one double bedroom and a separate living room on the first floor. This gives you a second reception space, ideal if children want their own den or you’d rather keep work and relaxation apart.
The top floor has another three bedrooms. Two are decent size doubles, both with sash windows that frame the valley and rooftops stepping down towards the river.
The third top floor bedroom is smaller but perfectly fine as a child’s room or home office.
Throughout the house you’ll notice original floorboards, traditional features and simple white walls.
To the rear is a level, southwest facing garden. A straightforward space for children to play, for a dog to stretch its legs or for a summer barbecue with friends.
Calstock itself is one of those villages people talk about quietly - not too loud as they don’t want too many people to know about it!
It’s still something of a hidden gem in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about seven miles from Tavistock and around eighteen miles from Plymouth.
It’s a five minute walk down the hill to the station where you can hop on a train to Plymouth. The journey through the beautiful Tamar Valley countryside takes just over half an hour, making this a very do-able commute.
There’s a popular primary school, an active village hall, a social club and Calstock Arts bringing live music, film and talks.
The walk from the village to Cotehele is a favourite, and Tamar Trails are only a few miles away if you prefer something faster paced.
For boating enthusiasts, there’s a quay, boat yard and deep water moorings. And if golf is your thing, St Mellion is around six miles away.
The landlord is open to leaving some or all of the existing furniture if that suits you, although the property can also work perfectly well unfurnished.
The landlord is looking for a long term let. But that should be music to your ears as this is the kind of place you can settle into rather than simply pass through.
If you’re looking for a family home with space, character and a genuine village community around it, this could be well worth a closer look.
