Features and description

Lovingly tended to by its green-thumbed owners, a vibrant south-facing garden unfurls beyond this handsome Victorian house in Harlesden. Inside, living spaces of around 2,211 sq ft unfold, where a predominantly understated decorative scheme is punctuated by dramatic flashes of dark, atmospheric paintwork. Five bedrooms lie across its uppermost floors, and a sweeping original staircase winds through its core.

Setting the Scene

Harlesden was largely a farming community until the early 19th century, when city dwellers began choosing it as their primary residence, building large houses and marking the start of its urbanisation. Built towards the end of the Victorian period, this home is one such example of this period's influx of hearty housing stock, its attractive brickwork synonymous with the contemporary architectural style.

The Grand Tour

A hedge-topped wall sets the road back from the quiet street in front and delineates an off-road car parking space. Through the sunshine-yellow front door is an entrance hallway, with high ceilings and a beautiful staircase.

The living spaces lie across the ground floor and are wonderfully versatile. A white-washed sitting room is at the front, with a large tripartite bay window and built-in storage. A handsome marble fireplace sits on one side.

Arranged in a backwards L-shape, an open-plan kitchen, sitting and dining room are at the rear, each zone only subtly demarcated. Nearest the front of the house is a forest-green living space with a log-burning stove and beautiful views over the garden. Next to this is space for a dining table, placed in proximity to the kitchen. In the latter is a dishwasher, an American-style fridge/freezer and an oven. Doors descend to the garden - convenient for gathering herbs mid-cooking. The cellar is also easily reached from here.

There are two double bedrooms on the first floor, both with built-in storage. The principal room is a brooding, beautiful space painted 'Down Pipe' by Farrow and Ball, with original timber floors underfoot. A sublime bathroom also sits on this floor, with a freestanding bathtub, a walk-in shower and large porcelain tiles. Practical but elegantly appointed is a separate utility room with space for white goods.

Midway up the ascent to the uppermost floor is a striking stained-glass window. On the top level of the house are three more bedrooms, one with access to a garden-facing balcony, and a bright shower room. There is also access to a large loft.

The Great Outdoors

The owners’ passion for gardening has created a truly remarkable garden behind the house, with carefully landscaped sections and swathes of open lawn. A dining terrace unfolds directly from the kitchen, embraced by lush plantings of herbs, vegetables, fruits, flowers and abundant ferns. A greenhouse on one side provides plenty of space for year-round growing.

There is a pergola and a romantic archway, offering support for blooming climbers, adding seasonal colour and shelter from sunlight. A cook’s delight, the well-established kitchen garden extends toward the rear, where bountiful beds of perennial fruits and vegetables offer a fresh supply of produce as the seasons unfold.

Out and About

Connaught Road lies in the heart of Harlesden, minutes away from its vibrant high street and the Grade II-listed Roundwood Park. The area is well-served with all amenities and plenty of restaurants, cafés, and pubs. Rubio is a local favourite for breakfast, and the Grand Junction Arms is a Victorian pub with a hidden terrace overlooking the canal.

The green expanse of Roundwood Park is just a short 10-minute walk away. Grade II-listed, it teems with wildlife and has several sports courts and playgrounds, a café and outdoor gyms.

There are plenty of schools locally. Transport connections are excellent: Harlesden station (Lioness and Bakerloo lines) is a nine-minute walk from the house. Willesden Junction is also within easy reach and runs the Mildmay line towards Hampstead Heath, Kentish Town and Highbury and Islington.
