For more information on the trees please see the ‘Trees’ section below.
Trees
Arris Wood is an attractive oak woodland with hornbeam, birch, holly, and the occasional beech, sweet chestnut, sycamore and mountain ash. There is a very strong natural regeneration of young oak and other broadleaves throughout the woodland and some small patches of hornbeam coppice.
Arris Wood is designated as Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) by Natural England. Ancient Woodland has been under constant tree cover since at least 1600AD. It is valued as a rich reserve of biodiversity. The draft Woodland Management Plan for Bressenden Wood (of which Arris Wood is a part) is available upon request.
Wildlife
Roe deer can be found in the wider woodland with Muntjac and Fallow recorded in the vicinity. Bird species including spotted flycatcher, lesser redpoll, yellowhammer, marsh tit, grasshopper warbler, tree pipit, hawfinch, cuckoo and nightjar are recorded in the vicinity and might be present within the wider woodland.

Activities
The new owner of Arris Wood will act as a custodian for this wonderful ancient woodland and will be able to decide on how the wood will be managed e.g. to promote biodiversity, or managing for wildlife, or creating glades, or simply to be enjoyed as a rich natural environment for family camping.

Local area and history
Bressenden Woods, of which Arris Wood is part, is situated approx. 3km south-west of Biddenden and 4km north-east of Benenden in the county of Kent. The nearby village of Biddenden was in the 1300’s part of an important centre for Broadcloth manufacture, with much of the very attractive high street built during this period. Biddenden Vineyard is located nearby, which in addition to producing some fine wines, is also Kent’s largest cider producer.
Ordnance Survey first edition maps indicate that the woodland boundaries have changed very little since the mid nineteenth century. Old maps indicate that the coniferization of the woodland probably occurred in the early 20th century and the woodland has been commercially managed for several decades.
