History:
The original building was designed by renowned architect John Giles, best known for the Langham Hotel in Central London. Leavesden Hospital was established on a 143 acre site in the parish of Leavesden, on the outskirts of Abbots Langley, with the land purchased in 1867.
The foundation stone was laid in October 1868 by Dr William Brewer, Chairman of the Metropolitan Asylums Board. Construction and furnishing cost approximately £145,00, which was a significant sum at the time. The complex included an administration block housing offices, kitchens, storerooms, workshops and staff quarters, flanked by ward blocks, with male wards on one side and female wards on the other.
The hospital closed in 1995 and was later sympathetically renovated and converted into 63 apartments around 2004.
