Wulfric Wood, set within a wider block of Ancient Woodland, is truly a seasonal delight. The majestic beech and sycamore trees that fill the canopy offer a vibrant display through the year, from luscious greens in the spring to crisp orange hues in the autumn. Wulfric is accessed by a hard track which can be used year-round and is within easy reach of the M1, with Sheffield just to the north and the spectacular Roche Abbey ruins are just a short drive away.

From the roe deer, hare, woodcock, and sparrowhawk to the incredible array of fungi which proliferate the fallen trees and the forest floor, Wulfric is a thriving habitat for a range of flora and fauna, and makes the perfect location for a budding mycologist or wildlife watcher looking to nurture their skills and continue to promote this woodland as a flourishing ecosystem.

Having more instances of open space than is typical of the wider wood, Wulfric benefits from having the most diversity of plant life. In spring, the woodland is awash with green veined white butterflies flitting between yellow archangel, wild garlic and bluebells, making a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the dappled sunlight breaking through the canopy.

Our Forester's Thoughts

Harry says...

"My first thought would be to utilise the open areas within the woodland to create some regeneration corridors and glades, where young trees could germinate and establish. To further diversify the species within the woodland, I would supplement this with some additional planting of native broadleaf trees such as wild service, field maple, hazel, oak and perhaps some Scots pine.

I would then think about creating a small seating area, somewhere I could watch the butterflies and damsels go about their business on a sunny day and perhaps spend a night camping under the stars here, taking advantage of the access to the night sky and the lack of light pollution."
