A popular dormitory town for commuters to Exeter and Taunton, its fortunes were built on the wool trade, which prospered during the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries. Modern Tiverton has much to offer in the way of leisure activities with a museum, plenty of footpaths along the trackbed of the old railway, the Tivoli cinema, a new leisure centre with swimming pool and gym and a country park, which was created from the Grand Western Canal.
