A delightful mix of broadleaves and conifers with far reaching views, in a captivating landscape.
Located just east of the historic village of Hayfield and fringing the Peak District National Park, Elle Bank Wood represents a fantastic opportunity for a new custodian to enjoy their own woodland amongst a vast and beautiful landscape. The many attractions of this region - popular with outdoor enthusiasts - including Kinder Scout and Kinder Reservoir, are within easy reach.
Situated on north and northeast slopes with some less steep and flatter spots, the woodland soil composition is generally peat and loamy. The mature canopy is a blend of oak, beech, birch, sycamore, rowan, horse chestnut, Scots pine and larch. Shrub layer species include holly, hazel coppice and hawthorn. A number of open areas could be used to process firewood, and there are some further glades near the higher elevated southeast. Ground dwellers include primrose, red campion, hard fern and bracken. There are patches of rhododendron near the southern boundary and at the top of the wood, offering a splash of colour in warmer months.
Elle Bank’s Ancient Woodland status means that it has been continuously under tree cover since at least 1600 AD. Access to the woodland is on foot from a council road, up a private drive, and across a field.
Mammals such as dormouse, deer (roe, fallow and red), mountain hare, fox and weasel find refuge within the tranquility of the woodland. They are joined by robin, dunnock, rock dove (pigeon), greenfinch and numerous acoustic songsters.
Our Forester'sThoughts
Sam says...
"I would definitely rig up a few trail cameras to better understand the wildlife that calls this tranquil setting home. There are a couple of fallen tree stems that I would cut and process for logs for my log burner at home. Perhaps I would have a go at fashioning a bench or two from one of the trees, strategically positioning them where I can best enjoy the far-reaching views across the valley to Kinder Scout."
