Description

Hazelwood Cottage is an impressive stone-built house under a tiled roof, offering generously proportioned accommodation throughout. The front door opens into a porch with a tiled floor, coat and boot cupboards, and a door leading through to the hall. This also has a tiled floor, further space for coats (and even a desk), the staircase, and a well-appointed wet room with tiling, basin, loo and shower.

The large dining room opens through a wide archway into the similarly sized sitting room, together creating a substantial and versatile living space. Light and airy, it benefits from numerous windows, wall lights and a stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove.

The kitchen/breakfast room is tiled and well fitted with floor and wall units, work surfaces and appliances including a double oven, hob, extractor, dishwasher and fridge. As shown, there is ample space for a table and chairs.

Adjacent is a very useful room currently arranged as a fifth bedroom but equally suitable as a family room, hobby room, study or workspace. It includes fitted units with a sink, washing machine and fridge, and has a stable door opening to the garden.

First Floor

The staircase rises to a landing with a large airing cupboard. At the far end is the good-sized main bedroom, which has a full room-width range of fitted units offering generous hanging space and shelving. It also enjoys an en-suite bathroom with tongue-and-groove panelling to dado height, a free-standing bath, basin and loo.

There are three further bedrooms, one of which has fitted units and a ladder leading up to a loft area. Completing the first floor is an excellent tiled shower room with a walk-in shower area, basin and loo.

Outside

The drive from the road leads to double timber gates opening onto a forecourt providing ample parking and turning space. From here, a short, paved driveway continues to the large double garage, which has power connected and useful loft storage above.

The mature garden includes a rose archway, greenhouse and lawned areas bordered by established trees and shrubs such as laurel, japonica and privet. To the rear of the house, a wooded hillside rises, with steps winding through mature birch, yew, willow and other trees, many attractively clad in ivy. There is also an area fenced as a chicken run.

Partway up the hillside, in a wonderfully peaceful and secluded setting, stands the timber cabin/office with electricity and wood burner. This charming building is ideal as a children’s play space, study or quiet reading room.

A substantial quantity of timber has been felled and is seasoning; once logged, it can provide an exceptional supply of fuel.

About the area

Gurney Slade is a small Mendip Hills village straddling the A37 between Shepton Mallet and Bristol. Amenities are better than one might expect for a hamlet. The combined Gurney Slade Stores & Post Office keeps long hours and functions as a general store, newsagent and postal counter for the community. There are at least two pubs within walking distance—the George Inn in the village and the Horse & Jockey just up the road in Binegar—plus a popular farm-shop café, George’s Garden, at Marchants Hill. Community venues include the Gurney Slade & Binegar Memorial Hall and the nearby Ashwick & Oakhill Village Hall, both hosting regular clubs and events (yoga, Pilates, indoor bowls, history group). The nearest primary school is Oakhill Church School about 1.4 miles away, with other options at Chewton Mendip and Bowlish (Shepton Mallet). For sport and leisure, Mendip Golf Club is effectively “on the doorstep” (about a mile north of Gurney Slade on Golf Links Lane), and Wells Tennis Club is a short hop in Wells; indoor bowls runs at Ashwick & Oakhill Village Hall. There are also plenty of various sporting clubs in the surrounding centres.

Buses on the Wells–Bath corridor (173/174) stop in the village, with additional college services linking to Street, Glastonbury and beyond.

Road distances are convenient: to Wells about 6–7 miles (c. 17–19 minutes by bus), to Shepton Mallet roughly 4 miles, to Bath about 15 miles and to Bristol about 17–18 miles. Glastonbury and Street are each around 12–13 miles via Wells, making the Levels and their attractions easy weekend territory.

The nearest railhead is Castle Cary: about 10–11 miles (roughly a 15–20 minute drive in light traffic), or around 1 h 44 m by bus with changes.

Historically, Gurney Slade’s identity is entwined with quarrying—the dramatic faces and fossil-rich Carboniferous limestone here underlie a landscape of short walks and big skies—yet the village reads as a friendly, practical base with a proper shop/post office, pubs, halls, and quick access to Wells’ Cathedral, markets and arts scene. If you like low-key Mendip living with everyday conveniences and lots of countryside (plus golf and tennis close by), Gurney Slade is a quietly well-connected spot.

P.S.

A few extra comments.

Mortgages – we can help.

Bridging loans – We can help.

Moving house is complicated and stressful when a sale and purchase need to be tied together in terms of finance and timing.

Sometimes we can negotiate an agreement to suit both sellers and buyers.

Sometimes a bridging loan can solve problems and remove stress.
