When the current owner of Primrose Lodge looks back over the past 40 years or so, she has nothing but fond memories of her time at Rickyard Close in Bradwell. She and her husband bought the house for its exceptional location, the space it offered and its beautiful garden. “We wanted a substantial, single-storey home, where our grown-up sons could come to stay and we could host family occasions – and this place was perfect for us,” she recalls. “We all have so many memories of Christmases and other happy times spent here.” She adds: “Bradwell was one of the original Milton Keynes villages and it still had that old fashioned, community feel to it. At the same time, we knew we would be able to enjoy all the benefits of city living – proximity to shops, supermarkets, the train station, good roads and the redways.”

Rooms

ROOM TO GROW
Believed to have been about 10 years old when they bought it, Primrose Lodge had four bedrooms, but offered the flexibility to use rooms for all sorts of purposes to suit lifestyle requirements. It was built on land thought to have once been a market garden and was still leafy and mature, featuring a number of fruit trees. A few years after moving in, the owners had their sitting room extended to accommodate their growing family even better. “Our sons would boomerang back and come to stay with us for spells from time to time – and then, of course, they started to bring girlfriends, partners and wives. The extra space from the extension meant we always had enough room to accommodate everyone,” she recalls.

HAPPY TIMES
Looking back through family photographs, there are so many pictures of people gathered on the sofas in the sitting room – Christmases, birthdays and other special occasions. “We always had plenty of space for everyone and this house had the feel of a family home, somewhere people could come to spread out, spend time with each other and relax,” she says. The dining room was also a backdrop to many lively times, with people gathering round the table for everyday family meals, as well as celebratory dinners. “There is an open space between the kitchen and dining room, so you can serve food and pass dishes through,” she explains. “This arrangement worked very well for us. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, however, new owners may wish to look into the option of opening this space up to create one larger kitchen breakfast room.”

FLEXIBLE HOME
Indeed, new owners may well wish to put their own stamp on Primrose Lodge and really make it their own. Certainly, it has huge potential and versatility to suit those with a range of lifestyle requirements. For example, at times, two of the smaller bedrooms have been offices, but they could also make great hobby or leisure spaces. “Most recently, we have had the house arranged with three bedrooms and a study, but certainly the fourth room could be a bedroom too,” she says. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there could also be scope for further extension, perhaps.

SUMMER MORNINGS
There is a family bathroom and a separate cloakroom. The master bedroom also has an en suite shower room. Both the master bedroom and the second bedroom have doors opening onto the garden, making them wonderful spaces on spring and summer days. “The master bedroom is especially lovely. This is a good-sized room, where it is wonderful to sit up in bed in the mornings, with the doors open. You really feel part of nature,” she says. The garden itself, which was maintained exquisitely by her husband, has given everyone immense pleasure. “The sitting room looks out over the garden, which is bathed in light in the afternoon,” she explains. “My husband loved working outside or sitting inside or out, just enjoying the garden and watching the birds in the trees. The garden is one of the biggest features of the house.”

VILLAGE LIFE
Bradwell, which with its thatched houses still has an abundance of old English charm, is a friendly community, with two pubs, a church and a social club. “We enjoyed being there so much because it still had that sense of being a real village,” she says. “Also, there were always nice places to go for a walk and it was easy to go shopping or catch the bus into Milton Keynes.” She adds: “It is a perfect location for someone wishing to live in a village but with all the convenience of a city – and the fact we were there for over 40 years shows just how much we loved it.”

SETTING THE SCENE
Primrose Lodge sits in gorgeous, mature gardens, with ample space for outdoor relaxation and entertaining. There is off-road parking and the property has a double garage, with recently installed roller doors.
