Features and description

This two-bedroom weatherboarded cottage forms part of a Grade II-listed terrace in Chigwell. Period character sits alongside a contemporary combination of bright paint colours, Welsh slate and microcement. Gardens bookend the house, planted with scented roses, honeysuckle, lavender, and fruiting trees. From one side of the house, Grange Hill underground station is a minute's walk away for links to central London on the Central line, and on the other, there is farmland, ancient woodlands and wetlands.

The Tour

The house’s front garden sits behind a tall hedge and white-painted picket gate. A garden path leads to the four-panelled front door in the weatherboarded façade.

Entry is to an open-plan living and dining room. Shelves and an original built-in cupboard set into alcoves that flank a pair of chimney breasts. Exposed brickwork is washed in a white hue, and a wool herringbone carpet runs underfoot. There are two sash windows, capturing garden views in both directions.

The kitchen opens from the dining area, recently renovated with Welsh slate flagstones microcement, Green Galaxy marble and terrazzo finishes. Cabinets with an oak worksurface run along one side of the room, fitted with a four-ring gas hob and an integrated oven. On the other side, there is a large Belfast sink set under casement windows to the garden.

A staircase ascends to the first floor, where there are two double bedrooms, both with original 19th-century fireplaces. The primary bedroom is to the front of the plan, and here, a two-over-two sash window frames views of the rolling fields opposite. There is a bank of built-in wardrobes for excellent storage.

A bright bathroom completes the ground floor, with a shower fitted over a bathtub. The bathroom is decorated with smart white tiles, microcement and 'The Tobacconist' by Coat, and Welsh slate floors.

There is a partially boarded attic space for additional storage.

Outdoor Space

A long front garden sits between the house and Manor Road, planted with a fruiting cherry plum tree as well as acers, magnolia and a weeping willow. The boundary fences are smothered in climbing wisteria and clematis, and beds are filled with peonies and lavender. The garden has two patios, ideal for sun loungers or a bistro table and chairs.

To the rear of the house, there is a quiet courtyard garden surrounded by climbing roses and honeysuckle, as well as a productive grape vine.

The Area

Chigwell is a thriving town on the outskirts of London, surrounded by trees and greenery. The wonderful Hainault Forest is a short drive or cycle away, with over 400 acres of ancient woodlands, a lake and a café. Epping Forest is only a little further afield, and provides further opportunities for exploring in nature.

Chigwell village can be accessed on foot, via a stroll through the fields. It has a number of excellent pubs and eateries, including the King William IV, Crown and Crooked Billet, and Capricho, which serves delicious Portuguese fare.

Claybury Wood is a 10-minute drive or a 35-minute bus ride away, and is thought to be one of the largest new public parks created in London for over a century. Managed for nature conservation and with a Green Flag Award, it spans over 70 hectares of meadows, scrubland and woodland, and is home to a variety of species including oak, hornbeam pollard, birch, hazel and sweet chestnut. The park has a host of walking, cycling and horse riding trails, and the ancient woodland has also achieved Forest Stewardship Council certification.

There are plenty of excellent schooling options in the area, including Ray Lodge Primary, Clockhouse Primary, and Woodbridge High School.

Grange Hill Underground station is just a minute’s walk from the house, and offers Central line services into the city via Hainault and Woodford. From here, Liverpool Street is approximately 30 minutes away, while Stratford can be reached in just over 20 minutes. There are also regular buses in the area that run services into central London. For travel by car, the M11 and the North Circular are also close by.
