Features and description

This impeccable mews house in Bethnal Green was created by award-winning architectural practice Featherstone Young. Designed with sustainability in mind, its bright living spaces are dressed in orientated strand board (OSB) - a compelling and consistent backdrop to daily life. The house is in the heart of Bethnal Green, moments from Weavers Fields and a short walk from Columbia Road.

The Architect

Headed by Sarah Featherstone and Jeremy Young, Featherstone Young was established in 2002 and has delivered a considerable number of high-quality, innovative buildings. Their work has been widely acknowledged as critical and inspiring – reflected in considerable client satisfaction, numerous awards, exhibitions and media coverage. Listen to our Homing In podcast episode with Sarah Featherstone.

The Tour

The house is approached via a quiet, cobbled street. Its stock-brick façade reflects the local vernacular but with a twist in the form of oak-framed windows.

The front door opens directly to a spacious reception room, with a concealed cupboard to the left with space for coats and shoes. Double-height ceilings soar overhead, weaving a visual connection between each floor. Currently configured as a study, this room remains versatile for multiple uses.

A dedicated bedroom also lies on this level; light cascades in from a rooflight on the storey above. Sliding doors delineate the space from the front living area and, on the bedroom side, have convenient full-height mirrored panels. On one side is a shower room, lined with colourful terrazzo tiles and with contrasting matt black fixtures.

The main living areas are upstairs. Remarkably designed, the space is framed by exposed beams that emphasise its tall ceilings. OSB lines the walls, its simultaneous consistency and variegation creating a tactile, rhythmic feel. The area's footprint has been cleverly maximised to create a dedicated kitchen, dining and study area that spans the breadth of the room.

At the far end, the contemporary kitchen has navy-blue cabinets and timber countertops that extend to form a built-in bench with plenty of storage underneath. Sustainable grey linoleum floors seamlessly tie the material palette together. A large picture window at one end mimics that of the window in the bedroom below.

The Area

The house is well situated for the best of Bethnal Green and the likes of London Fields, Broadway Market and Hackney's Mare Street. The greenery of Haggerston Park is also in easy reach, and Victoria Park is only slightly further afield, while Weaver's Fields lies only a few minutes walk.

Columbia Road is close by and is known, first and foremost, for its weekly flower market, although it also has a range of brilliant shops and places to eat. Campania and Brawn are evening favourites, while an outpost of Victoria Park favourite Pavilion is conveniently placed for a Sunday morning coffee and pastry.

Hackney Road is home to the likes of Morito, Sager and Wild and The Marksman. O-Zone Coffee and Common Ground are also nearby.

Bethnal Green station is the closest and runs Weaver line services. For the Windrush line, Shoreditch High Street is also easily reached. The Central line runs from Bethnal Green, a short walk away. There are also plenty of bus routes in the local area.
