The History of School House
As with many properties within the village, the house was a period, tenanted cottage that belonged to the Apethorpe Estate. In 1921, the Estate donated the cottage to the parish church of St Mary’s, and set up a Charity Trust with the Incumbent and two Churchwardens as the Trustees. In 1921 the property became the Woodnewton village school, head teacher’s residence, until the school closed down in 1990. School House had been the home to nine head teachers.
School House was a stone thatched single storey dwelling with attic. In 1949, there was a fire in the thatch and the roof had to be completely removed and the walls had to be rebuilt and raised for a replacement asbestos roof to be fitted. A simple lean-to structure was added to the back of the cottage and turned into a kitchen, with a bathroom and porch leading to a back door on the side wall. There was a thatched outhouse attached to the gable end, but was removed at the time of the fire, in 1949.
School House Today
Unoccupied for a quite a number of years, the house is rather dated and in need of improvement. However, it has good quality replacement windows, installed, and there is electric heating. The house offers two comfortable reception rooms, each with a fireplace. There is a basic kitchen to the back of the house and the rear hall, which has a door to the garden, also provides access to the bathroom. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms.
The house stands to the front of its plot. The garden has a high stone wall to the front, giving good privacy from the roadside. The western boundary is also an attractive stone wall. The garden is predominantly lawned, though in need of some work. A mature yew tree stands to the rear of the house.

Woodnewton is a popular village with a public house, the White Swan. There are footpaths and bridleways giving access to the gently rolling countryside.
