Description

Leverington Hall is a magnificent Grade I Listed country house, of circa 1630, thought to have been constructed for Robert Swaine, a JP and High Sheriff.

The house, which is of particular Architectural and Historical importance, is traditionally constructed of period brickwork under a part Collyweston Slate and part tiled roof, with particular attention drawn to the splendid Elizabethan chimney breasts indicating that part of the house dates from an earlier period.

The Hall is positioned within approximately 2.4 acres, of attractive and mature gardens, combining formal walled, landscaped gardens with a spectacular Magnolia tree, informal woodland gardens and a myriad of flower borders, shrub beds and space. There is also a detached three bedroom coach house cottage within the grounds.

Leverington Hall
The handsome red brick hall offers some 5,800 square feet of accommodation over three floors, with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and three reception rooms, aside from a large family dining kitchen wing.

It retains period features, including high, heavy timber beamed ceilings, grand fireplaces and timber panelling, combined with high quality modern fittings and elegant décor, including largely travertine floored reception areas.

Set back behind the wrought iron fence, Leverington Hall has a coach house turning sweep, providing a formal access to the front door and porch. A secondary entrance via electric gates provides an 'every day' access, with ample parking for several vehicles and access to secondary accommodation and grounds.

The front door and porch opens into a spacious and beautifully appointed reception hallway, complete with Wainscot Panelling which is continued throughout the property. The principal reception rooms all line the west facing property’s frontage, providing spacious reception rooms flooded with natural light complete with panelling, two window seats and a period Frosterly marble fireplace. The drawing room has timber, panelled walls and a contemporary Adam fireplace fitted with a wood burning stove. The study is also panelled with an impressive fireplace, whilst the impressively proportioned timber beamed dining room has a sensational, broad and deep brick inglenook fireplace with exposed timbers, and links to the kitchen wing of the house.

The fitted kitchen is a bespoke Shortland suite, with timeless solid pippy oak units, marble worktops and integrated appliances, arranged around an Aga. The triple aspect room is perfect for informal dining, or catering for significant guests, with ample space for seating and dining areas, with an external entrance to the rear driveway.

The staircase rises from the reception hallway to the first floor landing corridor, off which there are four generously proportioned double bedrooms, two of which are ensuite, with a further well-appointed family bathroom. The principal suite is complete with a Victorian Adam style fireplace, full Wainscot panelling and built in wardrobes.

At the end of the corridor, a staircase rises to the second floor, where there is significant further accommodation, including a fifth double bedroom, served by a second floor bathroom, a games room and a 32ft play room.

The Coach House Cottage
The detached coach house cottage forms part of the walled garden’s southern boundary. Refurbished in 2007, it offers three bedrooms and one bathroom, with adjoining garaging and mutual privacy from the Hall. It is perfect for family members, as has been the case, but also ideal for letting purposes.

The Gardens & Grounds:
Leverington Hall has two entrances. Two sets of wrought iron electric gates open to the property formal front carriageway driveway, whilst a secondary electrically gated entrances, to the south of the Hall, accesses a gravelled driveway that leads past the Hall to the Coach House Cottage, along with garages and a workshop beyond.

The gardens are delightful and extend to 2.4 acres, or thereabouts, in total. A largely walled formal garden, to the east (rear) of the hall, with a southerly aspect, has a sweeping lawn and deep planted shrub and flowering borders, framing a large magnolia. The lawns are interspersed by seating terraces and a breeze-house style garden building.

The remaining grounds wrap around the walled garden, with a grass tennis court, a paddock and mature deciduous trees that frame the property’s boundaries to arable fields to the south and east.

Location

The village of Leverington is set in a convenient location just a mile and a half from the centre of the market town of Wisbech.

With its spectacular church, dating back to the 13th century, the village also has a local shop and post office, a primary school and a village pub and sports centre.

The Georgian market town of Wisbech offers a bustling centre with a number of high street retailers and independent shops, restaurants and cafés, as well as several excellent schools, including the independent Wisbech Grammar School.

By road, the A47 provides connections to Peterborough (22 miles), with mainline rail links to London Kings Cross, to the west, whilst to the south, Ely (25 miles), with Kings Ely School, has rail services, via Cambridge, to London Kings Cross.
