The land on which the property sits was initially owned by Gertrude Simpson, a well-known Sheffield family, whose son Vivian Simpson played football for Sheffield FC and Sheffield Wednesday, winning the Amateur Cup in 1904 (SFC). He was awarded the military cross in the First World War, leading the attack on the Cordona Trench and being the first man into the enemy trenches. He was killed in 1918 by a sniper.
