This picture-pretty, three-bedroom cottage lies in Gweek, Cornwall, on the northern periphery of the beautiful Lizard Peninsula. Replete with original features, exposed beams and a wide stone fireplace testify to its earliest history. Private gardens lie to the front and back, with sheltered spots to follow the sun from dawn till dusk. Helston lies to the east, while the beautiful Helford river with its sailing prospects and glorious sub-tropical gardens is a short distance away.

Setting the Scene

Small but with a buoyant community, Gweek is a pretty spot between Porthleven and Falmouth. Its name was first recorded as 'Gwyk' in 1358 and derived from the Cornish word for "forest village".

Double-fronted, the house's stone frontage is exceedingly pretty. It sits in a sloping site and, as a result, has an elevated garden with restorative and far-reaching views. The current owners have reimagined its interiors with a sensitive eye, adopting a pared-back and soothing palette of predominantly neutral hues.

The Grand Tour

Set back from a quiet lane, front gardens and courtyards unfold in front of the house, with pockets of thoughtfully landscaped shrubs and bushes. There are two entrances to Rose Cottage; a sage-green and a befittingly posy-pink door provide entrance to the ground-floor living spaces.

The latter opens to a utility-cum-boot room, which has a hand-crafted joinery composing a built-in bench and deep storage cupboards. White goods are neatly enclosed in a bank of attractive navy-blue cabinetry with an oiled beech countertop. There is a deep butler's sink here, as well as a backsplash formed of pretty decorative tiles. The room is also grounded with large porcelain tiles that continue across the ground-floor living spaces.

From the boot room is the kitchen, which has the same beech countertops but, this time, atop smart white units. There is a Stoves oven as well as a second butler's sink and plenty of storage. White-painted beams span overhead across the entirety of the ground floor and the windows that punctuate its front-facing aspect have neat shutters.

The sage-green front door is passed en route to the living room, which is centred around a log-burning stove set above a tiled hearth. Most recently home to a designer, much of the soft furnishings have been made by hand, with great care and attention to detail and most notable in this part of the house. There is a solid timber ledge beneath the window - perfect for books or flowers - with further storage set on the opposite and adjacent walls.

Softly carpeted stairs ascend to the first floor, with handy storage tucked beneath. The house is built into an incline, meaning that there is additional access to the outdoors from the upper level. From here is a landing off which two bedrooms - one with built-in storage - extend. The rooms share a bathroom with a fitted bath and a shower overhead.

The largest of the three bedrooms lies at the furthest end of the first storey and is accessed via a secondary staircase from the boot room. Its finishes are pristine and in keeping with the overarching refined palette. An immaculate en suite bathroom adjoins at one end, with a bathtub, a walk-in shower and porcelain floor tiles underfoot.

The Great Outdoors

Uniquely, care of the site's incline, the rear garden is directly accessible from the upper level of the house. Stairs also lead from the front garden to the back of the site and a useful storage area. It lends for particularly atmospheric views out towards textured shrubs and plants.

The garden has been carefully levelled and creatively planted under its current ownership. Largely gravel-laid, it provides plenty of spots for a seating area for a quiet morning coffee, enjoying little but the sound of the river and the birdsong. It sits raised above the house with an east-west orientation that takes in delightful sunrises and sunsets in equal measure.

There is also an extensive front garden which runs the length of the house, subject to the same careful landscaping as the rear and provides plenty of scope for a seating set-up.

Out and About

Equidistant between the popular towns of Porthleven and Falmouth, Gweek lies just east of Helston in Cornwall. Gweek’s Classic Boatyard and café are a short bike ride or 20-minute walk away. Popular café, restaurant and bakery Flora, at the historic and unspoilt Trelowarren estate, is 15 minutes by car and The Black Swan and The Ship Inn are among local favourites for pubs nearby. The independent shops of Helston are a 15-minute drive away, notably CAST Café and a 15th-century pub with an onsite brewery, The Blue Anchor.

The house is also exceptionally well located for easy access to The Lizard Heritage Coast. The golden sands of Church Cove, a hidden gem perfect for surfing, swimming and bathing, can be reached in less than 20 minutes by car. Dollar Cove, which takes its name from the silver dollars that still wash up from an ancient wreck and the charming 13th-century church, St. Winwalloe, are also both within easy reach. Lizard Point, Britain’s most southerly, is a 25-minute drive away.

The cathedral city of Truro is approximately 30 minutes by car. It has a fantastic selection of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a museum and theatre. The university port of Falmouth is 25 minutes away, with an ever-growing arts and music community, there are a host of artisan food stores, independent and antique shops abound along with a new world music venue, arthouse cinema, waterside restaurants and pubs and the National Maritime Museum. St Ives is within a 45-minute drive to the north-west, with its own Tate and the Anima Mundi Gallery, a leading contemporary art gallery in the South West. It is also home to the wonderfully preserved Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Nearby is Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, host to a multitude of installations by international artists.

Local schools include the primary and secondary schools in the harbour village of Mullion, Truro School and Truro High School for Girls, and Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Falmouth.

From Truro, there is easy access to the A39 and A30. Stations in Truro and Redruth are both 30 minutes by car, providing direct GWR links to London Paddington in 4.5 hours.
