THE HISTORY...
East Wing, Teversal Manor is a magnificent country home with a fascinating and colourful history. Believed to date back in part to at least 1612, the imposing Grade II Listed mansion was originally home to the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. Since then it has evolved in its structure and had many notable owners and interesting connections. For a long time, it was in the ownership of the Carnarvon family; the 5th Earl of Carnarvon was, of course, best known for his role in the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb.
A LITERARY CONNECTION...
Teversal Manor is also famous for playing an important role in literary history. It is said to be the inspiration for Wragby Hall in DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. In the first world war, the house was offered for use by Elizabeth Dowager Duchess of Carnarvon, aka Elsie, for the rehabilitation of Belgian refugees and soldiers. They put a slope down to the second garden terrace for wheelchairs and it is said that gave Lawrence the idea for Constance’s husband Clifford, who was in a wheelchair. In the book, the village was called ‘Tevershall.' Published in 1928, DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover was banned in the UK for more than 30 years because of its explicit scenes. Since the famous trial in 1960 over its eventual publication, it has been the subject of a number of films and television series.
THE PROPERTY...
The house is in need of updating and improvement in areas but offers the potential to create a fantastic home in over 2,824 sq.ft of living space. The kitchen/living/dining room, with its south facing aspect, really is a showpiece space, a large room with high ceilings and huge windows flooding the space with natural light and, having been recently renovated, provides quite the entertaining space.
The adjoining room is the snug, a much more subtle room, a space that could be turned into a relaxing retreat.
Two further reception rooms span the south facing side of the property;
A lounge with beautiful panelled walls, a reminder of the properties history and charm.
Then a family room, soaking up the garden view at the rear and the ideal reception space for families with younger children that would like their own space.
The fourth bedroom with space for an en-suite completes the ground floor space.
Two double bedrooms, one with en-suite, can be found to the first floor along with the family bathroom.
Whilst on the second floor you will find the third bedroom.
There is a garage to the front of the property along with parking whilst at the rear there is a well established garden with sun terrace that has steps leading down to a further patio area which then leads onto the lawn.
