Features and description

Architecture and interior

“Norma” is of the Groningen Tjalk type of Dutch barge, a rare survivor which has been meticulously restored to her original condition retaining her original elegant lines which attract much admiration amongst the boating community both in the UK and beyond. This type of barge with her double ribbed beams makes her hull much stronger and was designed for coastal sailing.

There is a light and spacious wheelhouse which is currently used as a Dining Area. Down to a large open plan cabin which is filled with light and has an unusually high and very attractive wooden ceiling. Fully fitted kitchen with cooker, grill, sink, fridge, freezer, microwave, washing machine, dryer. Three good sized cabins, two separate toilets, shower with pressurised water system. Good headroom throughout the barge. Lots of storage.

“Norma” makes a wonderful central London home to non-boating people. It’s not essential to have knowledge of boats, engines and boating equipment to enjoy this special lifestyle. However, if “Norma” is fully equipped and ready to motor or sail down river or beyond across the Channel.

History

Built in 1891 as a tulip carrying barge in The Netherlands to the traditional Tjalk design which converts very well to provide spacious living accommodation with plenty of internal space and headroom. This exceptional barge has had in the region of £1m invested in her over the past few years. Her maintenance record is excellent with a full survey being carried out in 2019 and a full repaint in 2023. On deck the rig, winches and sailing equipment are all in excellent condition. “Norma” can be helmed with a tiller or with hydraulic steering which is controlled via a wheel or a joystick.
