Key information
Features and description
- Spacious well mixed woodland situated in the South Downs National Park
- Private vehicle access and storage in place
- This woodland is not suitable for residential use
Headstone Copse is a wonderfully spacious well-mixed woodland situated in the South Downs National Park. If accessing the wood from the south across the field you are first greeted by spectacular Monterey pines that tower over the main entrance.
The copse gets its name from a historic event that took place 200 years ago. There is a grade II listed memorial stone in recognition of this which is located at the entrance to the field on Cams Hill.
Numerous clearings throughout allow lots of light into the woodland. Underfoot, grasses cover the wider open areas making it a fantastic space for group woodland activities. There is a clearly defined camping area with a fire pit, compost loo and also storage container currently in place, which is included in the sale.
The wide open glade (approx 1 acre) attracts a range of butterflies and birds including firecrests. Roe deer and rabbits are often seen. Wildflowers include ragged robin, foxglove, yellow archangel and primrose. Other flora that can be seen in older areas of the wood include anemones, 4 face clock, Solomons seal and others such as bluebell, pignut and stitchwort. There is also an impressive, historic flint quarry in the northeast corner of the wood overlooked by mature beech.
Headstone Copse is located on the hill above the popular village of Hambledon giving it far-reaching views out across the countryside in all directions. The Isle of Wight is visible from the entrance on clear days. The village with a great local pub, small shop and popular vineyard are all within easy walking distance across the field to the east.
District is Havant and the County Council is Hampshire
