Scottish castle in spectacular island location.

Description

Wester Kames Castle dates from around 1500, and was once the seat of the Spens family. By 1895 it formed part of the Marquess of Bute's estate, and only the ground floor was standing. The 3rd Marquess of Bute commissioned the architect Robert Weir Schultz to rebuild the tower in 1897. The junction of the original ruin and the 19th-century rebuilding is marked by a line of brickwork. Schultz' attention to detail was delivered in a sympathetic restoration, resulting in a convincing Baronial tower.

The tower stands four storeys high, with a five-storey stair tower at the northwest. Wester Kames is a Category A listed building.

The accommodation comprises four bedrooms located on the upper floors with the principal bedroom occupying the fourth floor exclusively. The cosy kitchen with AGA, dining room and utility room are located on the ground floor and the formal drawing room occupies the entire first floor, benefitting from a splendid fireplace with woodburning stove and incredible views over Kames Bay.

Wester Kames Castle is surrounded by open countryside and is in close proximity to the sea. The garden is around 2 acres in size and is mainly laid to lawn.

Location

Wester Kames Castle occupies a beautiful position near Kames Bay, just outside the charming coastal village of Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute.
An outstandingly scenic and historic island, Bute is situated at the heart of the Firth of Clyde, off Scotland’s verdant west coast. The island possesses areas of great natural beauty and has been a popular holiday destination since Victorian times. Due to its proximity to the Gulf Stream, the island enjoys a particularly mild climate and has become known as the “Madeira of Scotland”. Rothesay, is the principal town on the island and sits about 2.2 miles south of Kames Bay, with a population of approximately 5,000 and an extensive range of amenities including primary and secondary schooling, shopping, a hospital, swimming pool, sports centre and golf course. Regular ferries (Caledonian MacBrayne) operate from Rothesay to Wemyss Bay (35 mins), and Glasgow city centre and the international airport can generally be reached in under an hour by car from Wemyss Bay which also has a direct train link to the city centre. A second ferry from Rhubodach, in the north of the island, to Colintraive, allows easy access to Argyll and the West Highlands. The Isle of Bute offers wonderful hill and coastal walks, three golf clubs, sea fishing and trout fishing. Owing to the island’s superb location in the Firth of Clyde, with Arran to the south and marinas at Troon, Gourock, Largs, Inverkip and Rhu on the mainland, Bute is also an extremely popular sailing destination.
