Description
Lady Eleanor’s Cottage is a picturesque listed (Category B) estate cottage of substance dating from 1833 to the design of William Burn, one of Scotland’s most notable architects at that time. The distinctive red sandstone is understood to have been reused from the original Whittinghame House. The distinctive scrolled barge boarding with kingposts and finials was added in 1839 to all gables. Other features include the large grey slates and the decoratively coped barley sugar chimney stacks.
Lady Eleanor’s Cottage was originally built as a school house for Lady Eleanor where she taught sewing. Lady Eleanor (nee. Maitland, died 1869) was wife of James Balfour who bought the estate in 1817. Redcliff House, next door, was built just prior to the cottage and is listed separately. Both are erected on the former site of the village of Whittinghame. The boundary walls and railings are included in the listing.
Lady Eleanor’s has been lovingly refurbished overtime and has been well cared for by its current owners who have maintained the property whilst also spending considerable time and money on its surrounding gardens. The house offers comfortable modern accommodation whilst also retaining its characterful and period charm.
From the main road wooden gates open to a gravel driveway arriving to ample parking in front of the house. The house faces south and the main door to the property is centrally located on this side, situated under a covered vestibule with double doors opening to a wide hallway with partially panelled walls and oak flooring, which is a feature throughout much of the property.
The sitting room is a generous size with a triple aspect and is bathed in natural light from the series of bay windows which overlook the gardens and countryside beyond. The room features working shutters, decorative cornicing and a handsome wood burning stove which sits centrally on the eastern wall with doors either side that lead back to the hallway.
The kitchen is at the heart of the property and is a bright and spacious room, with four velux windows set above. There are traditionally styled units topped with a quartz work top and an integrated Belfast sink. The appliances throughout are all Bosch and include an oven, induction hob, fridge / freezer, wine fridge and dishwasher. There is plenty of space for a dining table as well as space at the kitchen island for dining and entertaining.
The principal bedroom looks south over the open East Lothian farmland and features a decorative fireplace and bay window. Opposite the entrance is a conveniently located shower room which is fully tiled and has a wall hung WC, wash hand basin with storage below and a walk-in shower. There are two additional bedrooms on the east side of the house which are adjacent to an attractive bathroom with twin wash hand basins, a wall hung WC and bath with shower over. The bathroom fittings throughout are by Duravit with Axor accessories.
The accommodation within the house is completed by a back vestibule with door to the driveway as well as a utility room with units, a wash hand basin and space for a washing machine and tumble dryer.
Annexe:
A few yards from the back door is the garage / annexe which is accessed by double doors. The space here could be utilised in a variety of ways including as additional bedroom space, a home office or studio as well as many others. There are large sliding doors looking out onto an east facing patio and three velux windows which flood the room with natural light. The room features a kitchenette with integrated basin with cupboards below. Completing the accommodation is a shower room with shower, wc and basin, a separate boiler room and store.
Gardens:
The gardens wrap around the house from east to west so the sun can be enjoyed throughout the day. Set behind the pretty stone wall which bounds the property are well kept lawns and well stocked, colourful flower beds. Many overgrown trees have been removed which allows sunlight to penetrate the entire plot. On the north side of the house, facing east is a sheltered terrace by the annexe where morning sun can be enjoyed. Raised slightly above the house is a further terrace which overlooks the Whittingehame Water and is an ideal spot for outdoor dining and entertaining.
Location
Lady Eleanor’s Cottage is situated in the wonderful East Lothian countryside, about 3 miles south of the pretty village of East Linton. The area has excellent services. The nearby conservation village of Stenton has a primary school, while the neighbouring village of East Linton has a broader offering of services including a hotel, pub, butchers, pharmacy and deli. Slightly further afield, both Dunbar and Haddington supplement this offering with supermarkets and a range of high street shops, banks, professional services, hotels and restaurants. There are local nursery, primary and secondary schools and three independent schools, which are The Compass in Haddington (primary), Belhaven Hill in Dunbar (preparatory) and Loretto in Musselburgh (3-18). Edinburgh also has a number of independent schools, many of which have direct bus services from East Lothian.
The surrounding countryside is very attractive and there are numerous expansive sandy beaches along the coast. The area is famous for its links golf courses with Muirfield, Gullane, Luffness, Archerfield, Renaissance and North Berwick all within easy reach.
