The Property
Nestled in a quiet yet central location with excellent parking provision, beautifully maintained grounds and quirky features, The Tower Wing is an amazing opportunity to own a part of Stanhope’s history. With records for the site dating back to the early 13th Century, Stanhope Castle was potentially demolished in the 1600s, with Cuthbert Rippon of London and local architect, Ignatius Bonomi of Durham starting the process of rebuilding it in 1798. There have been several variations of use since then including a school for boys and in 1980 it was sold, private apartments were created and the property achieved Grade II Listed status the same year.
The grand entrance through the stone arch in the castle wall and up the sweeping driveway are like entering another world, away from the hustle and bustle of the town. The outer door opens into an equally grand foyer with flagged flooring, wood panelling and chandeliers and the entrance hall to The Tower Wing leads off from this with a traditional black and white tiled floor.
To the front of the property, in the curve of the turret and through period glazed double doors is the amazing drawing room. The tall windows let light flood in and the high ceiling, ceiling rose and original wooden floor are complimented by a large marble fireplace with real fire, to create a wonderful homely atmosphere, even in such an impressive room. On the opposite side of the hall, a single glazed period door leads through into the dining room and then down the steps into the kitchen. The layout of these two rooms is wonderfully different and bursting with character features such as another marble fireplace and real fire, a range cooker and skylights to create a light, bright space. The kitchen is fitted with wooden units and a breakfast bar, with space for further free-standing items and a delightful pantry nook. Stairs lead down to the basement where there are three excellent rooms for storage and a wine cellar with stone shelves. Behind the staircase to the first floor is a handy cloakroom and WC.
On the first floor, the large principal bedroom boasts a fireplace, a large shuttered window in the turret, built-in storage and a smart en-suite shower room. Two further spacious bedrooms are located on this floor, one of which is in the turret to the front of the building and is currently set up as a home office, enjoying relaxing countrywide views, conducive to work. The family bathroom offers a delightful contrast with its fantastic handmade copper bath tub and separate modern shower cubicle with massage jets and ceiling windows are a thoughtful addition to this internal bathroom.
Up the final flight of stairs is the tower sitting room, which could suit a variety of uses. It has wonderful arrow slit windows and access to a roof terrace with flag pole and spectacular all-round views of the town and to the river and the fields beyond. This is a delightful place to sit and enjoy the sunshine, with a morning coffee or an evening glass of something!
Externally
The Tower Wing has access to well-maintained grassed and wooded areas, and plenty of residents’ private parking. A lit patio provides an ideal space to sit around the fire pit or to have a barbeque, and picnic tables can be found dotted around the grounds.
