Known as the mansion house of the Hutton Family, Houghton Hall is regarded as one of the most imposing and impressive buildings in Houghton-le-Spring. It is located on the aptly named Hall Lane in the east side of the town centre, within walking distance of the local shops, schools and business district. Houghton Hall is rumoured to have been built in 1575 though it is more likely that it dates from around 1589, when it was occupied by Rev Robert Hutton, the Rector of Houghton-le-Spring and is grade 2 listed.
This opulent residence extends to provide nearly 12,000 sq ft of gross internal accommodation over 3 floors and boasts not only some Elizabethan panelling but also what is thought to be one of only three self-supporting cantilever staircases left in the UK. What was once a spots hall at the rear of the premises has now been turned into a storage shed with rollers shutter access to the front.

A generous hallway with impressive staircase provides access to the large breakfasting kitchen and three reception rooms at ground floor together with shower room, bathroom and washroom with w/c’s. There is also a craft room and 2 offices together with a secondary staircase to the rear.

At first floor there are 4 bedrooms, a washroom with cloakroom and shower and bathroom together with a large games room and secondary living room. At second floor there are a further 3 bedrooms together with 3 large storerooms and the secondary staircase.

Externally this detached residence has a huge entrance driveway which is blocked paved and could accommodate up to 20 vehicles. There is a central tree in the middle as well as lawns to the side and bounded by a wall with iron railings. There is also a sperate entrance off Nesham Place into a secure yard which in turn leads into the garage/former gym.

The location of the subject property is excellent for accessibility being close to the A690 which in turn provides access east and west to the A19 (3 miles) and A1(5 miles) as well as to the nearby larger conurbations of Durham city and Sunderland.

Viewing strongly recommended.
