The southwest of Scotland is famous for its beautiful scenery, mild climate and excellent sailing. Cairngill locates in the heart of the East Stewartry National Scenic Area. Some of the finest beaches in Scotland are found along the Solway coast with Sandyhills Bay as one of the most appealing and the surrounding countryside is undulating and highly attractive. There are fine walks along the coast to Rockcliffe and Kippford – two nearby attractive villages.

The surrounding countryside abounds with wildlife including red squirrels, roe deer, badgers, otters and hares and excellent bird watching with red kites, kingfishers and peregrines all present locally in addition the neighbouring RSPB Mersehead Reserve with its wildfowl and geese sanctuary and wonderful starling murmurations.

Additional recreational facilities in the area include golf, with an 18-hole course in Sandyhills (Colvend) with unique views across the Bay, the Solway and to the Cumbrian hills. Additionally, there is the renowned championship course at Southerness, around seven miles to the east. Fishing, shooting and mountain biking are available in the district. The Solway Yacht Club is based in Kippford offering seasonal sailing for enthusiasts.

Colvend (around one mile) has a good village shop, primary school and café while there is a broader range of shops, schools and services in both Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas.
Communications are very good with railway stations in Dumfries and Lockerbie and the M74/M6 motorway network around 36 miles away. Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle are the proximal airports for regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland, continental Europe and beyond.

From Dumfries take the A710 coastal road south, passing through New Abbey. The village of Sandyhills is approximately 20 miles south of Dumfries. On entering the village, turn right into the driveway of Cairngill and follow the sweeping driveway to the front door.
