It was over 30 years ago now that the current owners of the house at Gatcombe saw the property at Great Holm and decided it reminded them of life back in the States. “We had been living in a lovely house in California,” one of them recalls. “It offered so much space both inside and out. As soon as my parents saw this house, they both felt it reminded them of where they lived before – it had that sense of space and openness. They loved both the house and garden and realised there would be enough room to put a swimming pool in, if that was something they decided to do later on. As it turned out, they didn’t ever do that, but it is certainly something new owners may wish to consider.”

NATURAL WORLD
Set in a highly sought-after quarter of Milton Keynes, the property was also appealing for its location. “We have really enjoyed being so close to Lodge Lake, just a couple of minutes away,” he continues. “This is a beautiful area for walking, cycling, wildlife watching or fishing. It is a picturesque place to take your camera if you enjoy photography. At the same time, we can get to shops, supermarkets and schools very easily, and it is quick to get into Milton Keynes. It is easy to see why this is such a desirable place to live.”

FOND MEMORIES
Set back from the quiet road, the four-bedroom, detached house was built in the mid-80s and offers substantial family accommodation. “It was a great place for us to grow up,” he remembers. “As children, we all had our own space, but there was also plenty of room for spending time together. My parents would often host New Year’s Eve and birthday parties here. My mother is very active in the local community and often has groups of people gathering in the house. We have also had some lovely occasions out in the garden and inside in the drawing room at Christmas. We always had a large tree and would gather round it to open our presents. This is a marvellous family home at any time of year.”

FLEXIBLE LIVING
Entered via a generous reception hall, the ground-floor accommodation is light and airy. The drawing room reaches from front to back of the house, with a bay window to the front and door on to the garden to the rear. There is also a spacious family or dining room, which could also be ideal as a second sitting room, playroom or teenagers’ den. “Then there is also a study, which could double as a bedroom if required. The space here is very flexible.” The kitchen is fitted and provides ample space for food preparation and storage. “The house is ready to move into but could also be updated by new owners if they wished,” he observes. “There is scope for some modernisation or for reconfiguring the layout. It is quite exciting thinking about how new owners might move in and make it their own.”

MANY OPTIONS
Up on the first floor of the house there are four bedrooms. Three of these are especially large and one has an en suite bathroom. The family bathroom is also at this level. “There is also a balcony, which can be accessed from the landing or from the front bedroom,” he says. “We used to sit out on this a lot when we were younger. Again, new owners may wish to renovate or update it.” Given the outside space at the property, there could also be the option of extending the house (subject to the relevant planning permissions), adding a garden room perhaps or creating a separate studio or leisure space. “I’d always hoped we’d have a swimming pool installed but the space we have here lends itself to all sorts of possibilities.”

A NEW CHAPTER
Only moving on now because they are relocating, the family have enjoyed Milton Keynes living. “We have always found it very easy to travel to other parts of the country by road or rail – it only takes six or seven minutes to reach the motorway and you can walk to the train station in 10 minutes,” he says. “The public transport is good, and this is an excellent area for walking or cycling. We will miss this house when we leave. It has been such a wonderful family home for so long. Now, however, it is time to hand it over to someone else, and we know they will love it as much as we have done.”
