Terry. “We invited professional interior designer Stephanie Dunning to redesign the inside of the house,” he says. “It now looks amazing – a lot of work went into making sure everything matched and that even the finer details were considered. Even light switches, for example, were recessed and some lamps were set up to be controlled from the wall. Everything was designed very carefully. We said we wanted each room to have its own character, and Stephanie has achieved that beautifully."

UNIQUE HOME
Orchard House was built by the previous owner. Terry
and his wife were moving up from Ealing, keen to live somewhere
with good access to the motorway and Milton Keynes, while also
offering privacy, seclusion and tranquillity. “For us the position of
the house was very important,” he says. “This was only the second
home we saw when we were looking and we knew immediately that
we wanted it. It was within a small enclave of houses, which was
safe and secure but within easy reach of Newport Pagnell town
centre. I travelled a lot at the time and my wife knew she would be
very happy to be here.” The house had a big garden and plenty of
internal space yet was also homely. “At the time we felt it was
unique,” he adds. “Now with the work we have done it is even
better.”
SUMPTUOUS SUITES
The detached property is entered via a spacious and welcoming
reception hall, leading into the main living areas. There is a large
study, which could also be a play room if required, together with the
drawing room, dining room and impressive kitchen dining family
room. Also on the ground floor, is the utility room and cloakroom.
Upstairs, a spacious and light landing leads to all four double
bedrooms. The master suite features its own large dressing room
and sumptuous en suite bathroom, which has a sunken bath and
marble surrounds. “Three of the bedrooms are en suite, making
this a great family home and an easy place for people to come and
stay,” Terry adds.
SPECIAL TOUCHES
The work to the house carried out by Stephanie Dunning was
significant, he explains. “The drawing room originally backed on to a
sun room but we took the wall down and opened it all up: above that
we extended one of the bedrooms and made a much bigger en
suite bathroom,” he says. “We knocked through from the kitchen
dining room into the family room to create a much larger space.”
Real oak flooring was laid in the reception hall and the drawing
room. “Everywhere was decorated using Farrow & Ball shades, the
fireplace in the drawing room was replaced and features such as
chandeliers were brought in,” he says.
ALL SEASONS
Orchard House has been a comfortable and easy house to live in,
offering plenty of space for relaxation, work and entertaining. “The
drawing room is nice and cosy in the winter when the fire is lit,”
Terry says. “In the summer, it is good to open the bi-folding doors,
making the kitchen and the garden warm when the weather is
warm. This is ideal for entertaining: we have had barbecues here for
35 guests, with people wandering in and out.”
VIBRANT TOWN
The Newport Pagnell location of the house has exceeded all Terry’s
expectations. He and his family have relished the privacy and
tranquillity of Portfields Farm, as well as the proximity to the
bustling town, with all its amenities. “It was really important to us to
be within reach of everything we needed,” he says. “From here, we
can walk into Newport Pagnell in 10 minutes and get to shops,
pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. Milton Keynes is also easy to
access from here – and then you can catch a train and be at Euston
within 30 minutes.” Terry adds: “This has been a wonderful place to
live and bring up our daughter. We have been very happy here and
so although we are looking forward to the adventure of moving on
we are also very sad to be leaving.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The driveway to Orchard House is accessed via five-bar gated
entrance. There is also an extensive gravel area, which offers secure
parking for numerous vehicles, together with a detached double
garage with twin electric doors. The rear and side gardens provide
space for kids to play, storage areas and also a large entertaining
terrace. As there are no houses directly behind the house and the
mature trees bordering the gardens, the privacy is incredible.
