Monkton Combe
Partly originating from the Anglo-Saxon word 'Cume' meaning valley, and the name this area was originally known by during the medieval period. The manor of Cume was owned by monks of the Abbey Church of St. Peter in Bath. Throughout the medieval period, the monks would supervise their demesne, grind their corn in the mills, tend the Prior's flock of prime wethers, and carry their produce by mule and packhorse up the drungs (as the hill footpaths are called) year after year for more than five centuries to their Priory in Bath. Cume thus became known as 'Moncken Cume and was later appended 'Monkton' and the name Monkton Combe was formed. The parish church of St Michael was thought to have been Norman but was razed in the early 19th century. The more or less Early English Period 1865 structure that currently stands with significant 1886 additions was constructed on the site of the 1814 one.The churchyard contains the grave of Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier who served in the First World War.Monkton Combe School is an independent boarding and day school of the British public school tradition. The Senior School is located in the village of Monkton Combe, while the Prep School, Pre-Prep and Nursery are in Combe Down. Founded in 1868, the school maintains many strong traditions with a particular emphasis on high academic and sporting achievements. The school also has a strong Christian ethos within the Anglican tradition. The school is also a member of the Rugby Group of independent schools in the United Kingdom.
