Over the last few years this grand early Victorian gem has been tastefully and sympathetically refurbished into a substantial four-bedroom family home. The majestic fireplace, high ceilings and cornicing interweave beautifully with the sleek, chic living quarters successfully enabling modern living in Victorian grandeur.
As soon as you open the door, you’ll know it’s home straight away. The exterior treats you to stately black railings and a small planting bay. Saunter inside to what feels like a newly built Victorian home, beautifully detailed cornicing and corbels, high ceilings and new wide plank oak flooring adds a contemporary feel.
To the left of the hall, you are presented with a double reception measuring over 23ft in length and large windows at either end keeping this space bright. You have lovely oak flooring and column radiators providing a nice finishing touch. A beautiful fireplace immediately draws the eye, hanging light pendants and lofty ceilings are also characteristic of the polite part of the house as it was known in the 1850s when it was first built.
Down a small flight of stairs, you have a utility area with handless high gloss units and a butler sink. Beyond this you have the first bathroom finished as a wet room with travertine tiling, there is a large walk-in shower with a rain drencher fitting, wash basin and a W.C.
Down a further custom-built staircase to the lower ground floor, you have a large kitchen diner forming the hub of the family home. It has been excavated down 1½ feet and then rebuilt up, so that the new floor level provides an additional 5” of clearance. Heating for the lower ground derives from the newly installed underfloor heating.
A smart new kitchen has been installed with sleek handleless units, complimenting granite worktops allows plenty of space for food prep’ and a large island keeps this a sociable space. Good quality appliances and white goods are integrated, keeping things sleek and of course you have the obligatory wine chiller that has become a staple in modern family homes. The room comfortably takes a large table and chairs, exposed wooden beams and brickwork add character and new French doors roll out on to the garden.
The garden is low maintenance, with two patios and planting bays with some established planting, it feels very private and isn’t really overlooked. In the corner there is a shed for all your furniture and tools.
The first floor offers the Master bedroom which spans the width of the house, it is awash with light from not one but two large sash windows. Bespoke built-in storage runs the length of one wall and stripped wood flooring looks splendid with the same column radiators in keeping with the rest of the house. Another generous double bedroom sits behind and is finished to the same standard, with views of gardens to the rear.
On the half landing you have the family bathroom, there is a white three-piece bathroom suite with a traditional bath for a relaxing soak, another shower over the bath for busy household mornings and a washbasin set in a vanity unit.
Another flight of stairs leads you to the third and fourth bedrooms, the sizes and finish mirror the floor below providing four generous doubles, finished to exacting standards with great storage and light.
Along Walworth Road there are a great variety of shops with a burgeoning restaurant and café/bar scene. You also have the colour and bustle of East Street market a short walk away too. Plenty of buses from Walworth Road will whisk you the few stops it takes to get up to the vibrant regeneration hub of Elephant & Castle for tube (Bakerloo, Northern) and surface rail connections. You can take a bus to most parts of London from the bus stop just minutes from the house and Kennington Tube is 0.8km away, approximately a 12 minute walk.
It is a short walk to Burgess Park, which, at a mile long, is Southwark’s largest. There is plenty to explore here – the café, outdoor gym, lake, state of the art playgrounds, tennis courts, table tennis tables, designated barbeque facilities and even a world class BMX track – and all kinds of community events to enjoy throughout the summer.
But don't take our word for it, see what the owner says:
Why did I buy it?
I needed a larger house to be able to create an office as my part-time self-employment business was growing. Walworth was more affordable than Greenwich and closer to my employment so that I could walk into work. I had not realised at the time that so much work needed doing, investing £135,000 on refurbishment.
Things I like about Walworth
Everything you need can be bought in a shop within ten minutes’ walk of the house. We even have a Screwfix which has just opened. It is a quiet neighbourhood; the neighbours are lovely people and there is no traffic. One of my builders described it as an “oasis of calm”
Burgess Park is pleasant and is unusual in that it is such a large park so close to central London.
You can catch a bus to anywhere from here! The Imperial War museum and Tate Modern are only 1½ miles away as are Waterloo Station (west), London Bridge (east) and Blackfriars (north) as Walworth is in the middle of a peninsula with the Thames wrapping around it. The city is 2 miles walk.

About this agent

Now a centrally located zone 2 part of South East London, we’ve seen an influx of people look to buy in this area over Herne Hill, Brixton and Dulwich in recent years – and we have a substantial amount of desirable Victorian and Georgian properties in the portfolio to be able to accommodate for this growing demand. Camberwell Estate Agents & Letting AgentsThe upwards trend among varying demographics to buy here is largely due to the great value for money that the area represents. Here there are a number of excellent schools both in the state and private sectors, which has been known to draw in the friendliest of families. These schools include Lyndhurst Primary, St. Saviours, Dog Kennel Hill and The Charter School. Being home to one of the world’s leading arts institutions, Camberwell College of Arts, and of course being in close residence of South London Gallery, the area is fast becoming a hub for artisan types. It’s also the houses that offer an attractive townscape punctuated with a characterful take on elegance – here you’ll find rows of polished cream coloured Georgian houses standing beside well-known street murals. The area has a fantastic vibe with many things to do – afternoon cocktails at The Crooked Well, a Victorian swimming pool, table tennis in Camberwell Green, the finest Tapas at Angels & Gypsies, Sunday concerts on the bandstand in Ruskin Park, community choirs, swing dance and more! Camberwell is always improving too. Burgess Park has recently had a whopping £6m makeover and is now the perfect environment for the sports-mad, offering a sports centre, football pitches, cricket pitches, tennis courts, table tennis, fishing permits, a 5km running track and a BMX track.
