Abbey Hill, Netley Abbey, SO31 5FA Hunters of Netley Abbey are proud to have been entrusted with instructions to offer for sale, this ground floor apartment in Netley Castle.
Situated in a stunning waterside location, Netley Castle has a rich history dating back to the mid-16th century and was originally built as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defences against the French. Built as an artillery fort, stone from the recently dissolved Netley Abbey was used in the construction and it was built to protect Southampton Water and formed part of a chain of defences collectively called the Device Forts.
After the English Civil War, the castle was decommissioned and was inherited by William Chamberlayne c1826, he added a crenelated tower and the property was leased by George Hunt for use as a private residence. In c1832, the castle was the subject of a series of sketches by JMW Turner.
In 1881 the castle & grounds were purchased by Sir Henry Crichton. He enlisted the services of the renowned architect John Dando Sedding who was influential in the Arts & Crafts movement. Sir Henry died in 1922 and Lady Crichton remained at the castle until her death in 1936 when the property and grounds were sold. The castle was then used as a rehabilitation unit for war veterans and later as a convalescent home.
In 2000 the Castle and grounds were developed into ten exclusive apartments in private grounds.
