The Story
Strolling through the house on Oliver Road, visitors never failed to be impressed by the incredible living space that opens out in front of them. From the front, the property, which enjoys a leafy outlook on to tranquil Oliver Road, looks like a traditional, Victorian cottage. Yet inside, it offers bright, modern living, with a contemporary, 21st-century finish. “When most people walk through from the front to the back, they do say ‘wow’ as they enter the kitchen and then carry on through towards the garden,” the current owner explains. “It is much larger and much more open inside than you would ever expect from the front. It has been a fantastic family home, providing us with all the space we have needed.”
Location and Space
Dating back to 1870, the property had two storeys when he bought it almost seven years ago. “I was attracted to it because it was tucked away in a really quiet position, with plenty of seclusion and privacy, and yet it was also well located for schools, shops, Ascot High Street and the train station,” he recalls. “It was ideal for family life and for commuting into London.” He could also see the potential the property held for significant extension and remodelling. “In 2017, I had the loft converted and there is now a large double bedroom up on the top floor of the house, which gives us three double bedrooms in total,” he explains. “At ground-floor level, the property was reconfigured to provide space for a large kitchen dining room and a spacious drawing room.”
High Specification
The house on Oliver Road is entered from the front, via a lobby with a roof light window, giving on to a downstairs shower room and storage cupboard. This opens into the spectacular Italian-made kitchen, with central island and breakfast bar, and white quartz work surfaces. Other high specification features include the likes of a Quooker boiling water tap and a Bora hob. “By opening it all up we were able to manage the space much more effectively and to bring a lot more light in,” he says. “This is now very much the centre point of the house; somewhere we can cook, eat and sit down together to watch television.”
Summer Sun
The gorgeous kitchen leads to a small inner hall and then the long drawing room, where French windows open on to the garden. “This is another good-sized room where we can sit in the evenings and watch television. I also have a desk in here, where I can work if necessary,” he says. “This room faces south, which makes it lovely and light. In the summer, we can wander out into the garden, where it is nice to sit out in the sunshine and perhaps have a barbecue.”
Lofty Heights
The first floor of the house encompasses the master bedroom and its en suite shower room. To the rear, is another large bedroom, with built-in storage. The new bedroom on the top floor of the house is particularly spacious and filled with light, thanks to a skylight window, as well as the dormer. “This is a fantastic room to spend time in,” he admits. “It has been my son’s bedroom, but it could make someone else a great workspace.” The garden, with its raised deck, lawn and shed, is something of a blank canvas. “We have enjoyed it as an addition to the house in the summer months but there is certainly much more someone else could do with it if they chose,” he agrees.
Perfect Balance
The location of the house has given the family access to some other exceptional outdoor spaces, from Swinley Forest and Ascot Racecourse to Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water. They have enjoyed being able to stroll to cafés and restaurants when the weather has been fine and hope to be able to stay in the area when they leave Oliver Road. “This is a great place to live,” he adds. “I do think I will miss the peacefulness of this particular location, however, when we move. It offers a perfect balance. It is an excellent option for anyone who wants to be in the centre of things, while also enjoying privacy and tranquillity.”
