Set within an exquisite, Italianate building, on the edge of leafy woodland, the duplex apartment offers a superb balance of space, character and convenience.
The Story
As soon as the current owner of the duplex apartment at Edenbrook Place visited the appealing property she knew it was everything she and her husband were looking for. Set on the edge of woodland, in a sought-after corner of Ascot, not only was it in an extremely desirable location, but it also offered a unique blend of period character and contemporary comfort. “The building itself is extremely beautiful from the outside and had been very carefully and recently converted into apartments when we first saw it five years ago,” she explains. “Each of the apartments is quite different and quirky in its own way. This one was so attractive that we just fell in love with it immediately.”
Exquisite Architecture
Indeed, Edenbrook Place has a very special charm through its colourful history and the desirable apartments it encompasses. The original Victorian mansion house is thought to date back to 1876 and was built in an Italianate style as the country seat of a man who worked for Queen Victoria. More recently, it has been a hospital building, training school for nurses and a nursing home. The spectacular building was converted several years ago into 14 luxury apartments. Work was carried out very carefully in order to retain the essence of the exquisite building while also creating homes that offered easy, contemporary living. “We loved its imposing, colonnaded entrance and its lovely staircase,” she says. “Inside our own apartment, the high ceilings had been retained which gave it an airy ambience.”
Period Features
Entered at ground-floor level, the two-bedroom, light-filled apartment has a creative, upside-down design. The current owners have enhanced the interior, which already featured a gorgeous wood block floor, with the addition of shutters and careful décor. The private entrance hall offers access to a bathroom and then opens up to reveal the main living space. This comprises a generous drawing and dining room, which opens into a kitchen to one side. “This arrangement always worked very well for us,” she recalls. “There is space in the main room to have a dining table and chairs as well as comfortable seating.”
A peaceful Place
At one end of the room, a south-facing, bay window incorporates beautiful French windows that open on to the private courtyard garden. “The sun pours into this room for much of the day when the weather is good,” she explains. “It was always lovely to open the doors up during the summer months when we lived here.” The terrace area has ample space for a table, chairs and plenty of colourful container pots, making it a pleasant space for outside dining and relaxation. “We could sit out there when the weather was warm and watch the birds and squirrels in the trees. It is a very peaceful location.”
Versatile Design
Stairs from the main hall lead down to the apartment’s lower ground floor level. Both of the generous, double bedrooms are here, together with a shower room. Each bedroom has built-in storage and doors on to a smaller terrace area. “Having two bedrooms does give you great flexibility,” she observes. “We chose to use the second bedroom as a guest room but did have an area within it that was arranged as a study space.” New owners could choose to make the whole room into a home office, gym or leisure area or even a second sitting room.
Leafy Living
One of the most magical elements to life at Edenbrook Place has been its secret access to the neighbouring woodland. The current owners enjoyed nothing more than strolling through the trees, looking out for badgers and other wildlife, and watching the changing of the seasons happening right before their eyes. “The apartment is also well positioned for walks through Ascot Heath and Windsor Great Park,” she says. “At the same time, there is also good access to Ascot High Street, supermarkets, the station – with its regular trains into London and Reading – and motorways, making this a very convenient place to live. It is easy to get into Windsor to go shopping and to Bracknell, with its new Lexicon centre.” The current owners no longer live at the apartment and admit they miss everything it offers. “Whenever I go back, I remember just how wonderful it is,” she agrees. “The trees are absolutely magnificent – it is lovely to be somewhere that is so green and beautiful.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The Edenbrook Place apartment benefits from its own private courtyard garden, which enjoys sunshine throughout the day and looks over towards nearby woodland. There is also a smaller terrace, which is accessed from the lower ground floor. The elegant building sits within communal grounds that residents can also enjoy. The apartment has allocated parking.
