The quarrying of Chilmark stone dates back centuries and Chilmark Estates formed the principle site in the locality for stone quarrying. The Chilmark Stone quarry produced limestone for much of the renovation of Salisbury Cathedral. The quarry closed in 1935 as demand for limestone had dwindled in favour of modern construction materials. The mined areas however created secure underground storage areas and the Air Ministry purchased the quarry and surrounding land in 1936 and stored predominantly air munitions and ordnance at RAF Chilmark as well as ‘proofing’ ammunition on the site. Weapons storage continued until April 1995 when storage of weapons transferred to the NATO depot at Glen Douglas, Scotland and the site was cleared and certified as free from any remaining ordnance. RAF Chilmark was then sold by the RAF in two lots.

Chilmark Estates comprises the majority of land and buildings which was formerly RAF Chilmark. The other part of RAF Chilmark to the west of Chilmark Estates known as Ladydown was purchased separately by a neigbouring Estate. Chilmark Estates was purchased in 2 tranches by the current owner / vendor in 2002 and 2004. The property has been brought into commercial use over the past 19 years, the most recent development in 2020 being the successful creation of new commercial units from some of the existing buildings at Ham Cross at the southern end of the property.
