Fine country house and additional two bedroom cottage on the banks of Loch Awe.

Description

Tervine House is thought to have been built in three stages, with the original part dating back to the 1700s, It is stone built with slate roofs.

Sitting in about two acres, with approximately 100 metres of loch frontage, Tervine House takes best advantage of the magnificent views over Loch Awe.

The main entrance is from a courtyard at the rear of the house. A tiled porch with double storm doors leads to a welcoming hallway with parquet flooring and a stairway to the first floor. The drawing room, dining room and a utility room with en suite shower room all open off this hallway.

The drawing room and dining room both have large windows with a wonderful easterly outlook over Loch Awe. The drawing room is of particular note with French doors to the gravel sweep at the front of the house, an open fire set in an ornate mantelpiece, fine ceiling plasterwork, a shelved alcove and a fitted window seat. The dining room has a bay window with views over Loch Awe. A connecting door leads into the kitchen which has fitted wall and floor units, a green Aga and room for a breakfast table beside French doors to the gravel sweep. Off the kitchen is a rear hall with a door to the courtyard and a further door to a sitting room with an open fireplace and book shelves. Off here is an Amdega conservatory with a tiled floor and French doors to the gravel sweep. A further small utility room and a bathroom complete the ground floor accommodation.

A staircase with wooden banister leads from the reception hallway to the first floor. Off a half landing are two bedrooms with an interconnecting shower room. Off the upper landing are three bedrooms; the master bedroom with dressing room and en suite bathroom, two further bedrooms, a bathroom and a walk-in linen cupboard.

Tervine Cottage
Tervine Cottage sits across a small courtyard to the west of the house and was converted from stone outbuildings in around 1959. The present owners completely renovated the cottage in 2013. It has a sitting room, kitchen with dining area, two bedrooms, bathroom and wc.

Gardens and Grounds
Tervine House is set in about two acres which includes a strip of foreshore below the garden, with a private stone jetty. The garden is principally lawned and boasts some magnificent mature trees and a variety of colourful, well-established rhododendrons. To the rear of the house is a partly paved courtyard around which are a number of stone outbuildings including an open fronted barn, a greenhouse and a garden store. A strip of woodland to the south of the house provides shelter and added privacy.

Location

Tervine House has a fabulous setting with magnificent views over Loch Awe, Ben Cruachan and the rolling countryside immediately around the house. The grounds of the house run down to the edge of the loch on which the house has its own private jetty and riparian fishing rights. There is a variety of freshwater fish in the loch and in 1996 a British record 25lb wild brown trout was caught. The loch also offers the opportunity for boating and water sports.

Loch Awe is a spectacular loch and is the longest freshwater loch in Scotland. It is 23 miles long and runs from the village of Lochawe to Ford near the west coast to the south. Kilchurn Castle, at the northern end, is a dramatic ruin which is one of Scotland’s most famous and most photographed castles. There are a number of islands in the loch including Innishail, which is the burial island of the Dukes of Argyll. Inveraray Castle, the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, is at the head of Loch Fyne.

Argyll offers a full range of outdoor activities. There is spectacular hill walking, climbing and mountaineering in the area with skiing at Aonach Mhor (near Fort William) and at Glen Coe. There is also deer stalking and the numerous lochs and rivers provide both salmon fishing and trout fishing. The west coast is also famous for its exciting sailing and varied coastline.

Kilchrenan is a quiet village reached by a seven mile long minor road and is a secluded area of great peacefulness and beauty. It has an inn, a primary school and a church. There are two notable hotels on the lochside – the Taychreggan and the Ardanaiseig – both of which cater for the upper end of the market and have good restaurants. Taynuilt, on the main road to Oban, has a post office, grocer/delicatessen, butcher and petrol station. Oban (21 miles) is the nearest major town and is the ferry terminal to the Western Isles. The town has a full range of shops, supermarkets and restaurants.
