"So few men can have left such a lasting legacy, in not just building their own home, but building a whole road with his friends and indeed his Bishopdown family.

A group of young working class men, who had little money and basic skills, but many ideas and ambitions to achieve a house of their own. Holding down day jobs, bringing up families and building in every spare moment that they had, including evenings, weekends and holidays as well as summer and winter.

This was no mean feat for the time when self build as a concept was in its infancy and the group had no track record of previous achievements. A group of individuals brought together by their dreams and for the majority the commitment and hard work required to see it through"
