Description

Stonewall is an imposing Grade II* listed country house of wonderful proportions set within mature part walled gardens and grounds and now coming to the market for the first time in over 50 years.

The property presents a wonderful opportunity for potential purchasers who are passionate about listed building preservation and restoration and who are prepared to complete what will be, when finished, a most impressive project, that was originally started as a labour of love by the vendors nearly 50 years ago.

This fascinating timber framed house, is believed to date in part from the 15th century with later additions, and supposedly during the late Tudor or early Jacobean times when the cloth-making and weaving industry became extremely popular in Kent, is said to have been home to a clothier named James Allen, who gave the church a bible which is now in the Maidstone Museum.

Internally, the house retains a wealth of period and reclaimed
features, including oak timbers and beams, wide oak floorboards, open fireplaces (several of which have been replaced) and good ceiling heights whilst boasting over 5,500 sq ft of internal accommodation.
The front door opens from the courtyard to a vaulted reception hall with turned oak staircase rising to the galleried first floor landing.
The reception rooms, together with the music room/study, are of generous proportions and feature open fireplaces and enjoy south or easterly aspects over the gardens.
Further ground floor accommodation includes the kitchen/breakfast room with brick flooring and an Aga, a scullery, a second kitchen/laundry room, a bathroom, a rear hall off which lies a workshop, store room and former store/milk room.
A wide turned staircase, installed by the vendors leads to the galleried landing. Over the first floor are six/seven bedrooms and a bathroom. There is a generous loft space which offers great potential subject to the necessary planning consents.

Stonewall is approached via double wrought iron gates which lead to a large cobbled area, where there is an old garage and a period brick built garden store. The front of the house is accessed on foot only, passing the Grade II* listed mounting block and through gates into the enclosed courtyard with clipped yew trees.
The gardens extend mainly to the east, south and west and feature lawns interspersed with yew and box topiary and four ‘garden rooms’ each enclosed by native hedging with a specimen tree as the focal point. There is a pond and old well and a thatched ‘bee house’ made famous by apiculturist, Robert Golding. The gardens to the east feature a Grade II* listed ragstone wall to the boundary.
The property has a right of access over the neighbouring driveway to a gate behind the period garden store.
