Watch Hill was built in 1937 by Prof G.M.B Dobson, an Oxford academic who was an experimentalist of unusual ingenuity who devoted much of his life to the observation and study of atmospheric ozone, the ozone layer is measured in dobson units.
His laboratory at Watch Hill, a substantial brick building with two workrooms, one large and one small had provision to make zenith sky observations, and a well-equipped workshop. Whilst the building remains, in an elevated position on the property Professor Dobson's equipment is in the London Science Museum!
