Five stunning country homes in Cornwall fit for the BBC’s hero, Poldark

Millions of people are tuning in each Sunday to watch the BBC’s new swaggering series Poldark. It seems the combination of Cornwall’s stunning coastal scenery and the brooding good looks of Ross Poldark (Aiden Turner), are already having an effect on interest in the area. Visit Cornwall’s website hits have gone up by 65% and B&Bs, hotels and resorts have reported an upsurge in bookings.

If Poldark hasn’t done enough to tempt you to Cornwall, we look at five Cornish properties that might seal the deal.

We start off with a country house that was built when Poldark is set. ‘Great Treverran’ is an 18th century five bedroomed house located a short distance from Fowey, a beautiful town set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With three reception rooms, a sizeable dining room, orchard and paddock, you can almost imagine Poldark trotting around this property on his horse.  (£900,000 Knight Frank, Exeter)

The second property is much more modern than the first and can be found on the Helford River. The house even has direct access to the river from its own pontoon via a boathouse. ‘Bosryn’ has four bedrooms, but within the garden is a guest annexe providing a fifth bedroom. The property, immaculately finished, has a lot of space that allows for a double-height, pitched ceiling kitchen with views over the water. There is an open-plan sitting room and drawing room, which has a granite fireplace and the French doors open on to a large terrace with stunning views.  (£1,750,000 Knight Frank, Exeter)

Third on the list is a Grade II listed terraced Georgian townhouse. Located on a quiet road with views of Truro’s cathedral, the house has three bedrooms and three reception rooms. The kitchen has been designed with integrated appliances and the dining room has space for an eight-person table. There is residents’ permit parking in the front and a south facing decked courtyard garden to the rear. (£350,000 Lillicrap Chilcott, Truro)

For the fourth property, we find ourselves in St Mawes. ‘The Gingerbread House‘ is a charming Grade II listed, slate hung, semi-detached period cottage in the centre of the village, just a short walk from the harbour and with beautiful views over moored yachts to Summers Beach and the mouth of the Percuil River. A perfect hideaway home or a savvy holiday letting investment in one of Cornwall’s prettiest and most popular waterside villages. (£375,000 Lillicrap Chilcott, Truro)

The final property is a three bedroomed family farmhouse to let. The location of the house means residents can enjoy complete privacy, surrounded by open farmland and countryside, whilst only being a short drive to the southern Cornish coast. The property has beautiful features throughout with slate tiled floors, open fireplaces and wooden beams. The sitting room has plenty of light, with double doors that open onto the conservatory – a perfect place for relaxing throughout the year surrounded by views of the garden. It also has a small paddock, garage/workshop and seven stables available for use by tenants.  (£1,100 pcm (£254 pw) Stags, Launceston)
