Property description

Grade I listed ground floor two bedroom apartment, with many original features and built by John Wood the Elder 1745-1748 as part of his scheme for the Abbey Orchard, Bath. Quietly located in pedestrian Duke Street, 0.3 mile from Bath Spa station with trains to London, Paddington in 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The vendor says: “The superb location right in the very heart of the World heritage city of Bath, greatly appealed. Very close to Bath Abbey, the River Avon, Pulteney Bridge and Weir, the pretty Bath Parade Gardens, Waitrose and a short flat walk to Bath Spa railway station, make this a brilliant place to live. I travel frequently so this is the perfect base in the city, so close to the station, yet so quiet.”

“The Georgian features of the apartment also make this such a special place to live. The building was originally two houses and was one of the early houses in Bath built by John Wood the Elder. There is a grand, spacious entrance and the apartment is off the inner hall. I have a hall which has plenty of shelving and a gilded rounded concave moulding over the door. The drawing room is my favourite room. It is panelled, has beautiful cornicing, a period fireplace and two large windows that look out onto Duke Street. There are working shutters to the windows, and a deep cupboard by the fireplace. The practical galley kitchen leads off this room. There is a dishwasher, gas hob and electric oven, washer/ dryer, numerous cupboards and a large pantry where I keep the fridge/freezer.”

“There are two bedrooms; a spacious master bedroom, about 16’ by 11’, which has a large cupboard and a built in wardrobe, with plenty of room for my hat collection! There are two windows in this room, again with shutters. The room is very bright and airy. The other bedroom is a single room. The bathroom has a large walk in shower and storage space as well.”

“It has been a pleasure to live in such a historic building. Part of the building was John Pinch the Younger’s office in 1829, and this was a training school for female servants in 1871, a Homeopathic hospital from 1875- 1893, and a boarding school in 1906. Up to the mid twentieth century it was run as the Westbourne Hotel. I really enjoy being able to walk to all the delights that Bath has to offer – the multitude of unique individual shops, lovely restaurants, such as the Ivy, stylish bars, the pretty Georgian theatre and the many galleries and museums that make Bath such a delightful place to live.”
