What We Say at The Zoe Napier Group If you live anywhere near this home you will know how unique and individual it is. A landmark property that has been bravely and exceptionally well converted with its historic integrity in mind. For those who are looking for a one-off piece of history with alternative living to a very high standard, this is the property for you.
What the Owner Says Both myself and my wife have local businesses and had driven past the derelict water tower at High Garrett for many years. Being avid followers of the grand designs tv programme, we always discussed that one day we would love to convert the tower and the land into something very special. Once funds allowed us to and when the property came to the market, we immediately made an offer and the rest is history. We had great help from the local heritage department and local residents to get it looking like it is now. The location is fabulous and the neighbours are certainly very quiet. With a bus stop outside, school runs have been a thing of the past. There are some great bridleways opposite and we enjoy taking the family and the horse out for a hack.
The Facts Where do we start with this most unique property. Full of history, the Water Tower was originally set on a site that was renowned as a working 'Prisoner of War camp' that opened in the summer of 1938. The site housed 700 Italians and was the headquarters for several other POW camps in the vicinity. The water tower fed the water supply to the camp and inside, unknown to the prisoners and the locals it was a high-tech Marconi communications fortress that acted as an early warning system for the Wethersfield airbase and other local airfields. In more recent times the Water tower has stood empty until now. The current owners have transformed this iconic landmark into a high-quality grand design with the historical integrity kept in place. The accommodation houses an open plan ground floor with bedrooms and ensuite facilities on all further four floors including in the amazing header tank that has been sourced and moulded by the original company Braithwaites, who have made steel water tanks all over the world. The header tank and entrance gates have replicas of the original mouldings that would have stood on the site nearly 100 years ago. Set on an acre plot this is a truly wonderful property.
