Property description

Strolling through the mature trees, and across the immaculate lawns on their own land, the owners of Somerson House comment on the idyllic setting of their beautiful home. The spectacular property nestles within approximately three acres of parkland grounds within desirable Aldham, close to Colchester. “This is a phenomenal place to live,” one of them admits. “We are right on the edge of the village, surrounded by beautiful countryside, and yet my husband rides to Marks Tey train station in four minutes every morning and can be at his desk in London within the hour. We can pick up the Essex Way close by and then walk for miles and miles through scenic countryside but we can also be at the Tollgate Centre shopping park or pick up the A12 within five minutes’ drive of here.” She adds, “another significant advantage of the location is that school buses for most of the independent schools in the area stop adjacent to the property. This allows complete flexibility on schooling choices.”

Magnificent Somerson House is a striking country home, which embodies historic grandeur, as well as impressive style. The original part of the property dates back to the 16th century but there are also 19th century Victorian additions to the three-storey building. “This is an area with lots of history – Aldham itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book and we believe Somerson House was one of the first properties to be built here as part of what was once a farm complex,” she says. In their own time here, the current owners have also made substantial changes. “When we first saw it, we loved its character and large plot of land with mature grounds,” she adds. “We knew we could transform it into something wonderful.”

Much of the house, which is not Listed, was reconfigured by the couple. Small rooms were opened up to create a superb kitchen breakfast room, which now flows comfortably into dining room, snug and family room areas. “It was very obvious to us that this was a house which could be changed into a home suitable for 21st century living,” she says. “We extended it slightly to create the lovely snug or sun room, which has a vaulted ceiling and has really become something of an extension to the kitchen. It has made this part of the house into a very, very sociable space.” She adds: “There are also lovely views of the garden from here and, as it is south-facing, it floods the kitchen with light and lifts this whole part of the house to give it a really different dynamic.”

Today, the ground floor also includes an entrance hall, reception hall, cloakroom, dining room, utility room, garden room, study and drawing room. “We virtually rebuilt the garden room and now this is yet another wonderful place to sit and enjoy the views,” she says. There are four bedrooms on the first floor – two of these have en suite bath or shower rooms – together with a family bathroom, a shower room and two dressing rooms. An additional bedroom can be found on the second floor. “I love the light in the bedrooms and the field views. We often spot deer and pheasants from up here, as well as a family of ducks which raises its ducklings in the pond at the end of the garden.”

Every corner of Somerson House has been carefully considered. Subtle neutral paint shades have been chosen from a Farrow & Ball palette and now work together to present stylish spaces with a calm ambience. The kitchen came from deVOL in London and was finished with beautiful oak work surfaces. “We have been through the whole house, updating everything,” she says. “About half the windows have been replaced with new timber sash models and the rest have been refurbished. All the beams have been lightened and we have added period-style features, such as coving and picture rails, where they were missing. There is under-floor heating along the south side of the house; oak flooring was laid and we had three wood-burners installed, which are fabulous in the winter time.”

From lively family Christmases to lavish summer garden parties, Somerson House is a simply incredible place to entertain. “There is so much space inside and out for people to spread out,” she says. “The grounds are very private and the children love having so much room to run around and explore.” The property has so much to offer, she emphasises. With stables and paddocks, new owners could even keep ponies if they wished. “Somerson House is spectacular,” she adds. “It sits in mature parkland grounds and blends wonderful character with all the space you need for modern living and entertaining.”

Setting The Scene
Surrounded by approximately three acres of its own beautiful land, Somerson House enjoys magnificent parkland grounds, including areas of garden and paddock. The grounds also include a useful detached barn, with second floor, a double cart lodge and a stable yard.
