The Story

LOCAL LANDMARK
Dating back to 1895, Strathaven is one of the most significant houses in Risca, the owner explains. "It was built in 1895 by a wealthy family called Davies - in those days this was a very agricultural area," he says. "The landowner who lived here was known as 'Davies the Corn Stores' and he generously gave a large piece of ground to the people of the village. This is still known as Stores Field today. In those days, the area had its own brickworks and every single one of the bricks in this house was made by hand." The owners themselves knew of Strathaven as it was owned by a friend of theirs. "We were looking for a home and realised this would be a super place to live," he recalls. "The house faces south and catches all the sun there is - and we knew we could extend it to give ourselves even more family space."

FAMILY HOME
Indeed, they have probably increased the accommodation at the house by approximately a third, he estimates. "We built a long playroom or family room at the back for the children: this is where they would go straight after school. It had space for a table tennis table and adjoins a cloakroom at one end. We also created an extra kitchen and laundry room, which is ideal for catering." Upstairs, they added an en suite shower room and outside they created a brick-built garage for two cars. "We made it into a wonderful family home and a great place for entertaining," he adds.

HAPPY DAYS
Today, the ground floor of the house includes a wide entrance hall, leading into the large drawing room on the left and the dining room on the right. "The drawing room, which has a lovely bay window, is more of a formal space, which is used when we have guests or if we want to watch different programmes on television!" he says. "We have enjoyed having the dining room for Sunday lunches and when the family is here." The kitchen is also a great space, with ample room for a breakfast table and chairs. The family room or playroom is where the couple tend to relax and enjoy looking out over their garden. "This is also a super room for parties - we have had some wonderful occasions here," he admits. "Most recently we had a celebration with about 80 guests."

BEAUTIFUL VIEWS
Upstairs, the landing gives on to four good-sized bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom has an en suite shower room. "The two front bedrooms are just delightful, with beautiful views through their south-facing windows," he says. "The ones at the back look out over the lawn, which is also nice." Their leafy, lawned gardens have given them enormous pleasure over the years. "We have always spent lots of time outside when the weather has been fine," he admits. "It is so peaceful and sunny here - it is lovely sitting out on the south-facing terrace."

SCENIC SURROUNDINGS
The surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for walking, cycling, horse-riding and playing golf. It is within easy reach of the Brecon Beacons and the coast, as well as the many facilities of colourful Cardiff and Newport. Proximity to the M4 also brings good connections to Swansea, The Gower, Bristol and England. "We are about a mile from the Risca bypass, which is a dual carriageway connecting to main roads - this is a great place for travelling from and a wonderful place to live," he adds. "I will miss everything about from approaching via its tree-lined drive to sitting out in the sunshine."

Setting The Scene

Strathaven sits in mature grounds. The property is approached via a sweeping driveway and front garden, with a large lawn and variety of shrubs and hedges. There is generous parking for several vehicles. The rear and side gardens are laid to lawn and bordered by deciduous and coniferous trees, as well as numerous shrubs and perennials. There is a built-in barbecue, together with a Jacuzzi hot tub, original brick-built storage shed, and garden shed.
