An Elegant Grade II* Listed Oxfordshire House Enjoying an Idyllic Setting in a Sought after Village
Great Milton is set in rolling countryside west of the Chiltern Hills and is a thriving community with a village school, two churches, a community owned public house, shop and post office as well as the renowned restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons.
The village is conveniently located close to Oxford, yet with rural surroundings which can be explored from good local footpaths. A wider range of services can be found in the nearby but larger centres of Oxford, Thame and Wallingford.
Communications - are excellent, the village is within easy reach of Oxford and as such the school run. The M40, which is a few miles north of the village (junction 7&8), provides swift access to not only Oxford but also London and the north. The A329 provides a link to Wallingford, Didcot, Reading and Henley to the south. The Miltons and the Haseleys are a particularly sought after area just slightly south east of Oxford. Haddenham and Thame Parkway, north of the village provide a reliable, rapid and regular train service to London Marylebone, ideal for the commuter.
Schooling - The village is particularly well located for Oxford schooling which include The Dragon School, Summerfields, Headington, Rye St. Anthony, Magdalen College School, St Edwards, Oxford High School and d'Overbroeks. Abingdon schools include St Helen and St Katherines, Abingdon School, Abingdon Prep, Cothill, Chandlings and Radley. Slightly further afield, but within easy reach are Wycombe Abbey, Harrow, Eton and Stowe to name but a few. Moulsford Prep School and Ashfold Prep School are also nearby. There is a Church of England primary school in the village.
The Priory is an impressive and significant Grade II* listed village house, which sits in a beautiful position at the centre of Great Milton.
Dating from the 16th century, it is believed to have been built for Dr. Westfalling who became Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University in 1565 and Bishop of Hereford in 1585. Notable recorded visitors to the house include Oliver Cromwell and John Milton, who are reputed to have visited John Thurloe, Secretary of State, during his tenancy at The Priory. The Priory has a tremendously welcoming feel.
A magnificent Tudor arch fireplace greets you as you enter the house and a beautiful flagstone floor hallway leads through the house to the principle rooms on the ground floor. At the front of the property is an attractive sitting room which has two stone-mullioned windows complete with wooden shutters, a fireplace with marble surround and wooden flooring.
The hall continues round to a dual aspect drawing room, the main features of which are its striking oak panelled walls and the large Tudor arch fireplace which backs on to the one in the hall. This is a triple aspect room so remains a light and enjoyable room to use all year round. Also at the front of the house is a large study with a wonderful wine cellar set into the floor by Spiral Cellars.
The hall continues to the dining room which has two south west facing windows looking out to the attractive gardens and usefully a second access leading directly towards the kitchen. The hallway opens up to a wonderful boot room with a large fireplace and direct access to the rear of the house. Off the boot room is a large laundry room with storage.
A short corridor leads up to the spacious kitchen/breakfast room which was skilfully added to the original property by the current owners. This large room provides an ideal living space for a family and has three doors leading out to the gardens.
The well equipped kitchen has gas fired Aga, Smeg gas hob, Gaggenau electric griddle, built in oven and dishwasher. There is a large island in the centre of the room with dining area beyond. Off the kitchen is a cloakroom and large boiler room. The house benefits from two staircases both leading from the ground floor up to the second floor. To the first floor is a large, dual aspect master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom with separate shower and dressing area.
Also on the first floor there are two additional double bedrooms and a large shower room with built in linen cupboards. At the south end of the first floor two steps lead up to a lovely guest room with fireplace, high ceilings and a large ensuite bathroom with extensive built in wardrobes.
The main staircase leads to the second floor and accesses two large bedrooms, one with an ensuite bathroom. The rear staircase also leads to the second floor and gives access to a bedroom, storeroom and bathroom. This area can be closed off if required to create a self-contained suite.
Square Footage: 6249 sq ft
