Drumlanrig Castle, with beautiful garden and grounds, the seat of the Duke of Buccleuch, is only about 3 miles away.   

Dumfries, 15 miles to the south, is the principal town in the area, and provides a wider range of schools, shops, retail outlets, and other services including a hospital, the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Also in Dumfries there is the Crichton Campus providing further education and University courses, as well as the multi-million pound sports and leisure complex DG One offering a variety of events including; theatre, cultural events, concerts, and conferences.

The local area is well known for its attractive unspoilt countryside and for the diversity of sporting and recreational pursuits. There are endless opportunities for hill walking, mountain biking, shooting and fishing, as well as horse riding in the area. There are several golf courses within the immediate area, with championship courses at Southerness on the Solway, and on the Ayrshire coast. Both of the Solway and Ayrshire coasts provide excellent opportunities for sailing and other water sports.

Both Edinburgh and Glasgow, with their International Airports, can be reached in a little over an hour by road and there are mainline railway stations at both Lockerbie and Carlisle, with Dumfries providing services to Glasgow and Carlisle.    The M74 can be reached along the A702, giving access to the motorway network across the UK.
