An outstanding penthouse apartment in a Grade II Listed building, dominated by its breathtaking view over Plymouth Sound. EPC Rating C.
Historical note: Described in Pevsner's "The Buildings of England – Devon" as "…and the Grand Hotel, in a fussier, mid 19th century Italianate".
The Grand is one of the fabulous buildings of Plymouth designed by architect George Wightwick, a pupil of John Foulston, standing prominently, south facing, on the western end of Plymouth's Hoe Promenade.
Originally a 77 bedroom hotel, it provided a vantage point in 1889 for Prime Minister William Gladstone to speak to an expectant crowd of more than 10,000 people. It was an historic ceremony which has remained an important event in Plymouth's history. The Grand's guest list over the years was impressive, including The Beatles, Laurel and Hardy, and many other famous names. It regularly boasted that it enjoyed "The finest view in Europe".
The Grand was converted in 2013 into 26 stunning two and three-bedroom apartments. Retaining the elegance of the original building, not just with the restored exterior, but also with a gracious reception hall and common areas, furnished in keeping with the original style. Modern lifts and facilities have been installed and the apartments have been configured to the demands of contemporary living.
The Penthouse is the jewel apartment, located on the 4th floor, enjoying a totally distracting view over the Sound and the English Channel, with the mile-long Breakwater in the distance, and flanked by the countryside of South Devon and South East Cornwall respectively. The Hoe Promenade, Drake's Island and the waterfront are in the foreground. The Sound is constantly populated by a myriad of marine craft, including yachts of all sizes, naval vessels from around the world, and the car ferries to Roscoff in Brittany, and Santander in Northern Spain. The Sound also hosts many yachting events, including The America's Cup in 2011, the finish of the Fastnet Race, Transat transatlantic Yacht Race, and numerous other important yachting and watersports events.
