A slice of Port Isaac history, this charming seaside bungalow combines comfort and convenience with a footpath direct to the harbour and the facilities of the upper village close at hand.

Description

The Old Dairy is a charming seaside bungalow of the 1930s and a significant building historically, serving as the dairy for the village. A footpath leads from the heart of the village through the narrow streets up to the dairy door. Today’s residents still remember being sent up there to collect milk and cream in their younger (nimbler) days. The outside remains largely unchanged and stands as a reminder of village life before supermarkets.

Enter the front door with its prettily decorative glazed porch into the warm, inviting atmosphere of an interior filled with natural light, good proportions, pale colours and period details, such as bay windows, oak floor and picture rails.
To the right is the sitting room, with its wide bay window, decorative glazed panels and fitted plantation shutters as in most of the rooms. Across the hall is a double bedroom, also with the wide bay, decorative glass and with built in storage.
Another double bedroom on the left of the hall is opposite the kitchen, a pleasant double aspect, open plan room, fitted with modern units and wall tiles. There is room for a family sized dining table and an old kitchen range occupies the large chimney breast. Wide windows give views seawards and over the harbour and old village, while a glazed stable door opens to steps down to the footpath. The end of the kitchen opens onto the original dairy, a light, triple aspect room with a decoratively glazed stable door to the front. This is now an additional sitting room.

Along from the kitchen is the bathroom with modern fittings and shower over the bath. Finally on the ground floor is a sitting room which overlooks the back garden and has patio doors onto a south facing terrace.

Stairs to the first floor arrive at a large, open bedroom with en suite shower. Despite the openness the sloping ceilings give a cosiness to the room, while three dormer windows allow views over the village, the harbour, open fields, and even the coastline beyond Port Gaverne.

There is ample under-eaves storage. A carpeted floor and door at the bottom of the stairs ensure that this could be a quiet space and very private principal bedroom.

The Dairy is easily located on the corner where New Road meets Back Hill. The gravel entrance allows parking for two cars. The garden is surrounded by a stone hedge to the front and a secure high fence at the rear. A gated side yard leads to the door of the old dairy. Alongside the footpath there is a locked outhouse, used as a laundry room and store. The openness of the site is an attractive feature of this property.

Location

There is always a buzz of activity in Port Isaac. This pretty, coastal port is spectacularly sited on the rugged stretch of North Cornwall coastline. Port Isaac was a busy fishing port and from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century it was an active harbour, shipping cargoes of stone, coal, timber and pottery. Fishing and fish-processing were also very important and today there are still fishermen working from the harbour.

The village is now internationally renowned for its association with the television series 'Doc Martin'. Most of the old part of the village consists of picturesque 18th and 19th century cottages, many of which have been officially listed due to their architectural and historic importance and are located within narrow alleys and streets that wind down the steep hillside toward the harbour.

The village also hosts Restaurant Nathan Outlaw which was voted the best restaurant in Britain in August 2017 by the Good Food Guide and holds two Michelin stars.
