Rooms

The Story
Basking in the sunshine on the balcony at their beautiful home, the Batra family reminisce about their time at their gorgeous Northwood house. Set on leafy and exclusive Sandy Lane, the seven-bedroom abode sits in splendid, mature gardens of over one-third of an acre and offers them every comfort, and more than a touch of luxury. “We have lived here for over 30 years now and were the first people to move in after it was built,” Kumar explains. “It still needed to be finished when we first saw it, but we knew it would be perfect for us and were happy to complete it as we wanted it to be.” His wife, Kay, still remembers the very first time she set foot in the impressive house. “I came with our son, who was 16 at the time, and as he entered, he said: ‘Mum, this is the house for us!’”

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY
In addition to its highly desirable location, Edgehill had many other attractive features, she recalls. “The rooms were all huge and were arranged over three storeys. We really liked the lower ground floor level, with its swimming pool, spa pool and snooker room. The kitchen was spacious; there was an enormous drawing room and fabulous dining room, and almost all of the bedrooms had a bath or shower room,” she says. “We knew there would be plenty of space for our own family and for friends and relatives to come and stay.” The house was light and airy throughout and the Kumars were able to enhance this through their own interior design. They completed the property to an exceptional quality and over the years have further upgraded and enhanced it. “Five years ago we went through it all again,” she adds. “We redecorated and had a new kitchen and bathrooms installed. Everything was finished to a very high standard.”

MAKING AN IMPRESSION
The main entrance to Edgehill is at ground floor level, where a double front door opens into an impressive reception hall where guests to parties, events and celebrations can be greeted in style. This leads to the chic kitchen, with a central island, contemporary, high-gloss units and ample space for catering for large numbers if required. The kitchen adjoins a dining room, with doors on to the balcony, as well as the simply stunning drawing room. “This is a huge room, with space for five double sofas,” says Kay. “In the summer months, we love to open all the doors on to the balcony and to have a barbecue out there. We sit outside long into the evening, enjoying the tranquillity and looking out for owls.”

SUMPTUOUS BEDROOMS
Also at this level, is the generous master suite, which comprises a large bedroom, with doors on to the balcony, an en suite shower room, an en suite bathroom and two walk-in dressing rooms. Another suite, with a walk-in wardrobe, en suite bathroom and cloakroom, with Jack-and-Jill access to the hall, is also here. Three more bedrooms are up on the first floor of the property. All also very sizeable, two of these share a Jack-and-Jill shower room, while one has an en suite shower room. There is an abundance of storage at this level too.

LEISURE AND PLEASURE
Two more bedrooms, one with an en suite shower room, are at lower-ground-floor level. This is also where the snooker and games room is situated, plus the swimming pool and changing complex. There is also a handy utility room or small kitchen down here. “We have gained so much pleasure from this part of the house,” she admits. “My son would often bring his whole class back from school at the end of the day and they would all swim and come up and down for snacks. On warm days, you can open up all the bi-folding doors on to the garden, which is lovely.”

FOND MEMORIES
Indeed, there have been many happy occasions at Edgehill over the decades. “We have hosted three weddings, with up to 250 guests,” Kay recalls. “We have had marquees out on the lawn and caterers in the kitchen. This is the perfect place for entertaining.” The convenient location of the house, with good access to the centre of Northwood, with its underground stations offering fast services into London, as well as to the M1 and M25, has made travel to and from the property easy. The area is also known for its good schools and beautiful places to walk, such as Oxhey and Ruislip Woods. “We have enjoyed everything about living here,” Kay admits. “We are only moving on now because we feel it is time to downsize – and nothing makes us happier than imagining another family moving in and enjoying it as much as we have done.”

SETTING THE SCENE
Set in delightful grounds of more than one third of an acre, attractive Edgehill has a large driveway to the front with space for up to 12 cars to park. There is also a four-car, detached garage. To the rear, the house opens on to a spacious balcony, as well as a terrace leading on the the lawned garden. The grounds are well screened by mature trees and well-established shrubs.
