History and Location
Burton Latimer derives the second part of its name from the Latimer family who lived there in the 13th century. The first part of the name usually means fortified farmstead or farmstead near a fortification. Before the arrival of the Latimers, it was known simply as 'Burtone'. The village grew in the 19th Century around the ironstone quarrying, clothing and footwear industries into a small but prosperous industrial town.
Today Burton Latimer is still a thriving town, with a full range of amenities and excellent transport links. Steeped in history it plays host to the Grade I listed Burton Latimer Hall, celebrated local pubs/restaurants including the Palmichael and Olde Victoria. The nearby Weetabix factory and other large industrial sites alongside a range of recent new build home sites have ensured continued growth in recent years.
The Yews itself played host to Princess Ka'iulani, the last in the line of Hawaiian royalty during the late 19th century. She was sent to England for her education and spent a great deal of time between the Yews and Great Harrowden Hall, eventually spending her time fully in the Yews being tutored by Caroline Sharp after her royalty funding ended. The princess was accomplished in many fields of endeavour and made quite an impact locally even becoming good friends with novelist Robert Louis Stevenson.
Potential
The residence until recently was a care home and has recently been granted planning permission for change of use to purely residential (C3) accepted ( October 2022 ). The Yews has, in our opinion, huge scope for potential ( subject to planning ), whether it be updating the main residence into a substantial family home; utilizing the cottage for potential rental/Airbnb income or development of the grounds by building several residential units or other potential commercial possibilities. The home could also be moved into straight away, particularly for fans of original and gothic features
