Hamilton (27 miles), has a wide range of shops, leisure facilities, theatre, cinema, galleries and museums, Strathclyde Country Park lies in some 400 hectares of countryside in the valley of the River Clyde and private schooling is available at Hamilton College.

There are many interesting walks in the area with a well preserved Iron Age hill fort on Abory Hill situated above the village of Abington. Arbory Hill Fort consist of several earthern ramparts as well as an inner stone enclosure with commanding views over the Clyde Valley. Fishing for wild brown trout, salmon and sea trout is available on the River Clyde.
