Whitehouse is a quiet village within easy commuting distance of both Lochgilphead in the North and Campbeltown in the south,. for employment and a wider range of amenities and services, Tarbert, is five miles along the A83.. The village has a small supermarket and a well renowned Academy. There are a number of smaller independent businesses within the harbour village and a good selection of social spaces too.. Tarbert Castle is an attraction, and the start of the Kintyre 80 mile hiking trail. It also has beaches and restaurants. Tarbert hosts many summer festivals, including music, fish, arts and crafts. The annual Viking pageant is spectacular. The resident Viking boat is transported from West Loch to east loch, by fully clad Viking enthusiasts.

 

The surrounding area is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast. There are walks and cycle routes available throughout the North Kintyre area including the Kintyre Way, stretching from Tarbert in the North to the Mull of Kintyre in the South. There are also opportunities for sailing, fishing, bird watching, shooting and diving along with many other popular pastimes.

 

For the golfers amongst us there are several 9-hole courses nearby, Tarbert, Carradale, Lochghilphead and further south three eighteen hole Courses at Machrihanish. And Southend. The first tee at Machrihanish boasts the world’s most popular and spectacular golf tee shot across the beach.

 

Approximately five minutes’ drive from Lagavullin Cottage lies the ferry terminal at Kennacraig sailing to Islay (then linked to Jura). The seasonal ferry for The Isle of Arran is situated at Claonaig  Skipness seven miles from the cottage. The West coast islands are popular for whisky tours and the Whiskey Trail for Kintyre and the islands passes through Whitehouse.

 

Just down the A83 is the ferry crossing to the very popular Isle of Gigha, Further south is the most spectacular Westport beach with four miles of golden sand and rollers for surfing. The dramatic Atlantic coast road leads to Campbelltown and The Mull of Kintyre.

 

Tarbert boasts a fine harbour and marina with the ferry to Portavadie (30 minutes). There is a superb health spa, restaurant and sailing leisure complex there. You can drive through the secret Argyll forest 29 miles to Dunoon which in turn connects to Greenock for onward connections to Glasgow and beyond.

 

The Isle of Arran to Ardrossan ferries link to the Scottish western border and Burns country. From Campbelltown you can get a passenger ferry to Ballycastle in Northern Island (seasonal) The Inner & Outer Hebrides are accessible from Oban via ferries just 1 and a half hours’drive North from Lagavullin Cottage, via the most picturesque, western highlands route.

 

Campbeltown Airport is a mere 26 miles away (thirty five minutes)  linking the islands by air and also Glasgow International is approximately 2 ½ hours away. Five Citylink daily coach services link Whitehouse to Glasgow (one via the Glasgow International airport). The coach stop is two minutes’ walk from Lagavullin Cottage.
